Lisa, ya better be proud of me. :celeb1:

A week in review of buying a pair of Orange spotted filefish.
Sept 20-27th.

We we been looking into getting a pair of these but hadn't planned on it exactly now and hadn't bought the ones we exactly wanted. We originally planned on getting them straight from the wholesalers so we could bypass a length of stay at the LFS increasing their starvation time. But these looked okay compared to many we had seen recently. There was still some fat below their lateral line, however they were pretty slender. Looking down on them from the top they were not paper thin. The female was skinnier than the male.

So why did we buy them? We saw promise. We asked the staff to coat an SPS skeleton in some frozen gel food. They looked interested. They peaked at it and spit it out, but I saw something in their eyes... LOL. I saw promise.

So in a bag they went.

We had a 25 g cycled QT tank ready for them filled with Tonga branch and an 18 gallon tank with HQI lights and SPS lunch frags.

We are using Formula One to smear on some SPS skeletons. I prep a few in the morning, put them in the fridge and change them out throughout the day.

They were nipping at the frozen but the male started to look a little thinner to me, went to his "sleeping branch" more and more and was looking a little pale. I decided to back up and re-evaluate and get them some large browned out colonies from a local shop for cheap. They now look like they are going to pop and have become very vibrant. I have several large colonies I can rotate through and another I'm going to make future training frags out of.

One problem. I don't know what to do with him. I really REALLY like inverts. But he's not the friendliest little coral defender....

So here's the fish. Yes, some of you just saw these pics in another thread.

One behaviour I saw that was odd was the male put place the side of his snout against the coral skeleton and then rub it will darting forward. Sometimes he would do just this behaviours a bunch of times in a row. He never wants to do it consistently when the camera is on his, but you can see his doing it 3 different times in this video.

Sometimes the female joins him in the dart like swimming... sometimes she ignores him. She has done it a couple of times. When he does it, he always does it to this branch of the skeleton. He sleeps right in this area.

Renee, I am proud of you. :) I urged Renee and Greg to post here on RC about their experiences with this fish. They were rightly concerned about flames and philosophical debates. I suggest we forego the flames and leave the philosophical debates for other threads in order to leave this one on-topic.

If those of you reading in this forum don't know namxas and seahorsedreams, they are a team o experienced marine fish and reef keepers. I've know them for about six years. They have a proven track record of success with several challenging species. Renee is the one who has posted the fantastic pictures of rare and unusual scorps and other rare or oddball fish in FO and Agressive.

For anyone not familiar with this fish species, it is notorious for not surviving in captivity, and in most cases, should not be purchased. There have been a small number of reported successes with this fish, and some interesting work underway. It's a challenging species, and shouldn't be attempted by anyone who is not 1) an expert marine fish keeper, and 2) willing to make a serious time commitment to meeting the needs of this fish.

Please ignore the typos... LOL. It all sounded good at 2 in the morning!

I would love input from anyone on how to increase my odds of succeeding.

Renee, do you think the file is attempting to irritate the coral so it will produce mucus on which to feed? I like the crab. :)

Not sure.... he's only done it to that one branch.

I wish I had of gotten video of him doing it again and again.... but it seems when I hit REC I had pressed stop! DOH!

Sept 26 - Oct 4th.

The female is eating frozen.
Hikari mysis = Likes.
PE mysis = Loves.
Rod's food = Still uncertain.
Brineshrimp = Doesn't care for it.

I rearranged the tank a little so see if I could observe them a better during feeding. The male gets a big fat belly after feeding, but I haven't actually seen him take any, so I can't assume he is.

Likes to eat out of the water column and pick from a tubastrea skeleton.

I am really glad I found this thread to hitch on to! (espeically since we are both in So. Cal.)

I just brought home a pair of these last week. They are both eating mysis and PE mysis twice a day. I purchased my pair thinking it was a M/F but it seems that the F has colored up a little bit and is showing full M markings.

Thanks Renee! I think i will be starting up my own thread for my pair! I will have to start taking a lot more pics!

Thanks for the link. Umm Fish is over here as well participating in these threads.

I'm thinking I need to get a video camera to see how well they are eating. Even my "Towel-Over-the-Canadian" didn't work so well.

There will be no further pics until the diatoms go. *blush* This tank doesn't normally have light and right now I'm using one of my soft spot lights. There's diatoms no where else in the tank except where that light hits. Oh well, soon there will be a pod fest.

Hey, Renee! Sorry, but I missed this thread 'til now. But, you know, I've been sick....

I have to call foul: "Towel-Over-the-Canadian" with no explanation? What the heck are you talking about? ;)

And, what's a few diatoms between friends? :) We want pictures...! I'd also like to see your tomentosus when you have time, if you don't mind.

LOL. I must have edited the explaination by mistake... or it's in another thread somewhere. I sat there on a stool the other day with a towel over me like a ghost from Scooby-Doo trying to get these guys to eat in front on me. It was my stealth mode. I was sitting there breathing in my own garlic fumes and C02 thinking I must be a crazy fool. I see him through the branch LR. I see him dive for it. Bring it up with his mouth and then sometimes I see it sink back down. I suspect he is eating some because his belly gets big like here, but I haven't actually seen it so I can't claim it yet.

I guess I could take a pic of the diatoms and us it for an algae ID guide... LOL.

Ok, nope. I just went to have a look. How about I try a water change and then some pictures? LOL.

I'll try for a pic of the tomentosus as well. They are in a tank that is hard to get pictures in. The bowfront really messes up pictures... but that's why my lovely 28g JBJ HQI is nothing more than a $10 QT tank. I've missed some great pictures because of that thing. Grrrr.
