Oxymonacanthus longirostris pair enters a mixed reef environment

I was a bit surprised when I saw the pair were females, but I was not going to pass on them. It will be interesting to watch their interaction.

I do not plan to quarantine. I will consider it if they seem to be having difficulty eating in my system. I will treat with prazipro as I already done a couple times with the leopard wrasses I got last month.

After confirming on MOFIB, I have 2 females... Sigh, and none of the piece at the LFS is male.. Do they change sex or the sex is fixed... Need to find a male if it comes again although I dont encourage LFS to bring them in as not many are willing to buy them and try to get them to feed...

How about Juvenile? But so far so good, they are not fighting, just a bit of chasing from the bigger one after feeding..

My filefish are consistently eating from the clip all day now and I am now only having to actually feed them twice a day. This is probably not even necessary though since I am putting large chunks of food in two clips an hour after lights on. They pick at it all day long and have nice bellies by the end of the night. The female has lost a lot of interest in brine shrimp but I believe they are both just full...ALL THE TIME. I now have to feed the chromis more than the files...isn't that something?!

I did not feed them on Saturday since I was out of town but even Sunday evening they still had a little bit of a belly going on.

I am leaving for the beach tomorrow at noon and will not be home until Saturday evening. I am not worried about their two day break from food but I am planning on using the hunger strike as leverage to get them to try and eat a little from the water column...since they have gotten used to eating more salmon than Rogger's recently.

I will update again on Saturday!

Do you have water quality issues with food in the water all day?

None whatsoever. In fact it's quite the opposite for me. I don't need to feed the chromis very much in each feeding but I do need to feed them often. The same holds true for the anthias (which still hasn't been caught!) and the OSFF pair.

Before they were eating from the clip I was having to broadcast feed a LOT of food in order for the files to get their fair share in order to really start fattening them up.

Now I'm only putting a sliver of rogger's and a sliver of salmon in their clip in the morning and they pick at it all day. The other fish don't bother it since I feed them nutramar ova and cyclops throughout the day. I do this because I believe the files (both) are actually eating a little bit of each when it settles on the sandbed since they go down there and snoop around periodically.

It's such a small amount of food I would be comfortable putting it into the tank on a daily basis without expecting anyone but snails and hermits to eat it. I am actually amazed that the files don't eat more since their stomachs are so round...but when you consider how small their stomachs probably are it isn't quite as hard to wrap your head around...:spin2:

new pair

new pair

I got my new OSFF from Diver's Den today. Here is a little video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i3c6EIjMPY

They look healthy and a bit thin, but not terribly thin. They are eating......corals. I have a range of sps frags in the tank and they have sampled some birdsnest, green slimer (their favorite), orange montipora of which I have a lot of and some milli. I knew this was very likely to happen and I am fine with it. I am interested to see the long term effects on the corals actually.

I have given some mysis, nutramar ova, cyclopeeze and formula one gel (which drove my skimmer nuts :spin2: ). They have not really gone for much of it, if any at all. However by the end of the night they seem to have full little bellies.

D5HP, which rogger's food do you use on the clip? It doesn't melt and break apart in the flow?

Everyone please feel free to chime in with any words of wisdom, it is much appreciated.

As an added bonus, today was the first time all three of the leopard wrasses that I have had for about a month were out at the same time. They are usually on different schedules but they are starting to overlap.

Do you have any dead acro skeletons? Try rubbing that gel onto the skeleton. My biggest concern is that they aren't going to even acknowledge that. It's like putting broccoli and pizza in front of an 8 year old and leaving him alone for a few hours.

Can you remove the coral or the fish?

I use both of his variants. They are both fantastic and neither fall apart or melt. I am actually ordering another two big packs early next week. I now feed all my fish his foods pretty regularly. Salmon doesn't very much either but it's not as good as the Rogger's stuff. I think you should still try some fresh salmon in a clip or on the coral skeleton. Renee's thread will be a great help if yours are still slamming down some SPS since she weaned hers completely...mine were already weaned upon shipping (as I imagine yours are..but they are being choosy)

Stick with it and you'll be fine! As long as you get them eating a little frozen you'll be all set...IME once they are full they do not eat very much for the rest of the day.

Those leopards are fantastic. They are really a wonderful species as well.

Dustin, thanks for the advice. I placed an order for roggers food this morning.

This morning after I put some nutramar ova in and stepped back I did notice the filefish picking at the rocks. My guess is they were eating it off the rocks.

As far as the interaction between the two (both are female) I have noticed the larger one chases the smaller one away while eating. Which seem to be similar behavior to the male/female pairs I have seen some of you write about. Other then that they swim around together and are rather peacful with each other.

Same as my female/female pair..I guess it is nothing much...

I think you'll find it more difficult to get them to eat prepared foods if they have an abundant supply of corals to nip at.

I don't believe so. I had tons of acro frags with mine and it still ate mysis. If it's not eating prepared at all it's best to have something there for the fish to eat, especially if you can't feed it as often like me.

I do not have nearly the amnont of polyps as twiggyb. I am happy to report that mine were sucking down mysis and ova today. They had very plump bellies. Makes me very happy to see them take to the food. I also have some roggers food on the way too.
Not only did they take to the food, they showed much less interest in the coral, much as other people have noticed.

Well this morning I first fed mysis and they were not as interested as last night. I then fed the nutramar ova and they ate that just fine. I then remembered that last night I thawed the mysis and ova in the same cup. So perhaps the ova juice flavored up the mysis last night. I am going to put my theory to the test this evening.
