Last night around 6:00ish on 5/13/08. I was harvesting what I thought was hair algea. I started to pulled some away when I felt that this was very rough and hair algea is smooth and slimey.
But I kept harvesting. After about 3 little clumps of this mystery algea was harvested, I looked at my fingers and thousands and thousands of little needles were in them. Then the burning a minute or so later. I imediately washed my hands and got the off. The 5min later pain jolting up my arm. After that i was scarred. So I called my LFS and they said it might of been bristle worms but when I went to harrvest it there were none there and little bristle worms don't leave needles in your fingers the size of a under score to a minus sign.(-/_)

Please help me out here.

You harvested a bristleworm, or bristleworms, along with the algae (yes, they can be that size). The spicules are made of calcium. You can remove them with duct tape or dissolve them with vinegar.

FWIW,
Kevin

Can I just say...Aqua gloves
Oh please! With Aqua Gloves on, you can't even pick a baseball off the floor, let alone pick at hair algae.

I agree with the others, probably a worm.
