pairing maroon clowns

Ok si I bought a small 1 inch maroon clown last friday for my established female which is about 3 inches. I have been floating him around in a plastic container for the first day, then have tried releasing him. She went straight for him, he did the submissive dance, but I had to rescue him, since she was beating the crap out of him. So I have tried this about three times, only for a little while on sat, sun and today. I guess I need to keep trying? he's back on the container. Should I keep trying? thanks.:mad2:

I have a pair of gold stripe maroons and what worked for me was introducing the little male in an empty clear plastic water bottle. I put a bunch of small holes in it so it would sink easily and gently put the small male in there, i just submerged the bottle with him inside so he could venture out when he was ready but still have a safe place that the large female couldn't get to him. My female was less territorial than yours from the sound of it. good luck with the pairing!

Just give it more time. I did what you are trying to do and it will work.

Not always.
I had a female that just absolutely refused the first 2 males I intro'd, one she killed before I could even fish it out.
They both tried to do the submissive dance, but she was so on them it was almost funny, they ran fast, stopped for a sec to twitch as fast as they could, but she would have none of it.
Not sure why, but sometimes they just don't accept some males.

yeah, I tried again yesterday and today, and she just wants to tear him apart I can even hear her mouth clinch closed. I got him in one of those breeder containers, so i guess I will have to give up on this one, since he got some fins chewed up allready. I bought him at the LFS for $31 and there was another maroon even smaller than him(he's about an inch), so i guess I'll have to go back and see if I can buy the smaller one(about 1/2 inch), or trade it for this one. What a headache! thanks for the replies anyways

Hopefully the trade will work out, try the same approach, specimen cont.
If it doesn't, I'd wait for a little while, try again later down the road.
Eventually she will develop breeding instinct and desire a male.

i had a maroon in a nano tank for about two years and now that im upgrading decided that she needed a mate. despite everyone telling me it would be hard to do i got a baby male about 1/2 inch big from a local reefer of rc. when i got home i acclimated both the male and female to my 29 gallon tank. i put the female in first then the male in the container. when i did she darted at him at first but then monded her business and went away. i wanted to keep him in there for a day or so, so she can get used to him, but then some how in the night the container opened and he was swimming freely without any attacks from the female. i think the key to my success was placing them in the new tank at the same time(she had no idea were she was and didnt really have a place to call her own). i aslo heard that getting a nem for them helps.
when u get the smaller one try moving ur rocks around so the female wont recognize the tank. that will help in my opinion.

31 dollars seems expensive for a baby. i got mine for 15

Yeah, I won't say it's ALWAYS difficult, many do get lucky first crack.
I agree change in scenery probably aided your success, made female less territorial.
The nem part I have to disagree w/ though, my exp nems make them even more territorial, protective of nem, but thats just my exp.
Private party breeder/hobbiest of course will be cheaper, but $30 is about average around here, sometimes a lil less.
Yeah, moving rocks may help if easy to do.

Before I bought my other clown to pair I told my lfs what I was doing and he was more than happy to help me out if it didn't work out. Just tell your lfs the situation and hopefully they are nice people that will help you.

Good luck

idk about the nem trick. ive never actually tried it myself, (just what everyone says) but im pretty sure that changing the rocks around will

wow maroons are expensive there. i found out that at my lfs the maroons were 10. but i already had my at the time.

I added my GSM pair to my 29 at the same time about a month ago. The bigger one is gonna be the female, so she was chasing the smaller guy around, wouldn't let him do diddly squat. If he tried to eat, she would poke at him, if he tried to move from the corner of the tank, she would poke at him, if he wanted to get near her, you bet your bottom dollar she would poke at him. Now finally they are both out and about, and I am not really seeing any fighting. Well, the female is biting me already, but leaves the male alone.

well I guess I could try to move some of my 90lbs of rock around, and trap my huge female, remove her and the little guy from the tank, and reintroduce them to the tank. I like the challenge, je je. My wife says that I put more attention to the tank then her sometimes!. I don't think so! Mission(re do aquascape tomorrow) tomorrow!

Well I had to take about 30lbs of LR to catch my superfast female. I decided to put both of them in my sump, and she stopped attacking him in there. He has been doing the submissive dance again. I didn't want to put them back in the main display, and have to move te rocks again. So i guess if they do pair up, I would just put them back together in the main display correct? thanks

yea u can leave em in there for a little while and see how they behave. but keep a look out! if they gat along then ur good=) is this the same fish or u got a new male?

Yeah, was wondering same fish also.
Next time catch your clown at night when sleeping, it's pretty amazing how dumb they are at night.
I've scooped out my last maroon w/ my bare hand, put her in a glass, and waited about a minute for her to wake and go absolutely ballistic, it's pretty darn funny!

Yeah, it's the same fish. I just got home from work, and she's all the way at the bottom and he's all the way at the top.She is not attacking him anymore for now. I guess now it's a waiting game. I didn't know that clowns can be caught easily at night, but i guess i know now! thanks

You have to be quick and stealthy about it.
I use a low beam light, long after lights have been out, and come in quick, you have like a minute to do so before they wake.
It's like they are sleepwalking/swimming for a minute, but it's fireworks when they wake!LOL
