Pairing Maroon Clowns

I want to pair my gold band maroon clown, which I've had for about 2 years, with another one so I can have two in the same tank. I have a 26 gallon with two neon pink BTA's. I bought a very small maroon clown today and it is in a 6 gallon tank with a plexiglass wall dividing it into two. I am going to put the larger older one on the other side and leave them together that way for a while to hopefully they will accept eachother. Does this sound like a good plan? Has any one had any success in doing this?

OK - I did this 3 years ago.

I'd had a gold-band maroon for a year which had gotten much larger over the year; bonded with my BTA. Then I got a fairly small gold-band maroon (still white-banded) and simply acclimated him in the bag for a couple hours and released him directly into the tank with the older maroon.

The result was fascinating to watch. The older one was so much larger that pecking-order was instantly established. No conflict; instant submission. And a sense of: where have you been all my life. Another 2 years along and they started laying eggs.

I'd read that size and age difference makes for a safer bonding of these aggressive fish - seems to have worked for me.

Good luck.

the female needs to be at least 4 times larger than the male. a preferred male size would be around 3/4"

Iv'e had a white stripe for over a year now...and looking for a mate. Iv'e never done it but I plan on just using a plastic container for a bit to see how it goes before releasing it.

use the plastic container everytime i paired a 3 and a half inch mean maroon with a 2and ahalf inch male and it worked well the seperation method is best

Agree w/ GSMguy.
Maroons are tough to pair, even when it's obviously male and female.
Specimen container is best.

i always thought if u added 1 no more than 1/2 the size of 1 in tank, u should probably be fine. i'm searching for like a 3/4"-1" maroon for my 2.5". does it matter if u mix a white band 1 w/ gold band 1. mine is white but i notice band on head is getting gold highlights...not sure what it really is...

Not sure about mixing white w/ gold, and curious about that myself.
I tried recently to add a 3/4" wht to my 3" female and she beat it to death b4 I could even fish him out.
This was in a 90 w/ 2 nems.

same here. I had a 5"+ maroon gold stripe and I added a 1 1/2". Instant friends. They have been togather for almost 2 years

The larger maroon has not acted too aggressive towards the smaller one. Infact the night I pit the two together in my ghetto breeding container, the larger one found a hole and squized into the side the smaller one was in. Suprisingly it did not destroy the smaller one. It sometimes nudged the smaller one into a corner, but never actually hurt it.

DMK: Gold banded maroons have white bands for their first year of life, they then begin getting a gold band on their head, so DMK you have a baby maroon.

Here's a picture of the operations

when she charges him he should lay on his side and virate in submission then if he is being a good boy he wont make eye contact but always shadow her and continue to submit but not run away they will be on their way to a long happy life

that means it is a sexless clown and this pairing should go smoothly your method of seperation is perfect i found that putting the male in the territory for 36+hours helps immensly

very nice. Is that a BTA? I can see what you mean by laying on its side, I think maybe later on in the month or in Feb I'll let them come together and watch them for a while to make sure if everything is fine.

lol. How do you like having a LTA? I thought maroon clowns generally only accepted BTA's.
Here's a picture of my BTA, although it looks more like a LTA..
