Paly Vs. Zoa Melt Thread

After spending an hour looking over one of my tanks and generally just fiddling around with it. I realized in all the years I have been doing this that when I lose a colony due to melting away, it is always one of the Zoa colonies. I don't beleive I have ever lost a Paly colony due to the dreaded mysterious melt.

Is it just my imagination and an older brain and memory that is just melting away as well, or are the Paly's less prone to disappearing that way?
 
I find them both prone to melting away but definately the zoas more often. Vitamin C dosing has pretty much cured that problem for me.
 
I started dosing Vit C a few months back after reading your thread and since then I have only lost one small colony. They were somewhat questionable when I got them so I wasn't surprised by it.
 
I have never had any of my palys melt as of yet ( Hope I didn't just jinx myself) but the zoas from time to time will just disappear. The Vita C though has made a huge difference in the few months I have used it.

You don't run a sakimmer on your 180g? I really suggest getting one. After you smell the gross crap (I mean that literally) it removes out of your tank, you'll wonder why you didn't use one before.
 
Well I did get one. I have a SWC 250askoll cone but the problem is I work 7 on 7 off and I don't trust leaving it on while I am gone for 7 days and when I get back it seems to take a day or 2 to get it up and running again so I basically blew it off and am going to try and sell it soon.
I just do more water changes and so far so good.
I feed sparingly and only have 7 fish total.
 
To tell u the truth for me anyways these protein skimmers are more of a pain in the arse than they are worth. Always seem to have to fiddle with the dang things.
 
Just use a bigger skimmer with a larger cup & you shouldn't have to empty it more than 1x/wk. In answer to your Q, you can dose VC w/o a skimmer but not in a smaller tank. I don't think you'll really be happy with the side effects of dosing w/o a skimmer though, since it will cause everything to slime up, hence the skimmer to remove this buildup, which results in nitrate removal.
 
This thing has a pretty big cup. This is my 1st skimmer and maybe I don't really know how to adjust them right but I was always having to play with it to get it working. When I got it adjusted right it would work great but didn't seem to last but a few days without having to readjust.
 
+1 for the adequately sized skimmer and collection cup. All I do with mine is empty the cup when it loads up. Oh, and once a month or so I let it suck up a cup of boiling RO water through the needle wheel / impelleter venturi intake to delime the needle wheel.

True, although he must have someone feeding the tank... Now that things look good, I'm down to dosing 1 tsp every other day now.
 
If a new frag starts to melt, should I frag the frag? Or just hope for best.

Blue African, looked good until today under 150W, would 250W be better?
