Par 38 LED spotlights

thats what i thought...i see alot of people on here with them and i kinda configured how many they had with the size of their tank compared to how mine is,,,though i havent seen alot of people with alot of sps in their tank unless its huge with a ton of spot lights,,,anyone having luck with just a few lights over a smaller tank?

I was just playing with my par 38 bulb and a par meter and was getting about 200 at about 10 inches away out of water, pretty weak if you ask me.

Im setting up a 125 gallon standard tank and am research these par38's and love them.

Now i want to place 7-8 par38s around the center of the tank leaving 12 inch on each side of the tank without any lighting.

i have a 48 inch t5 ho 4 bulb fixture i could install to run beside the par38's which can help illuminate the foot between the side glass and where the first par38 will begin.

Will this work or look good?

Not sure of I've posted on here yet. Here is my RapidLED PAR38 over a 12g long. My corals are really loving this light.

Would the rapid led PAR38 be a sufficient light option for a frag tank? I have a 18 gallon that I am using half as a refugium and the other half for a frag tank. the frag "tank" is approx. 10"X10" so which would be better, the 60 or 80 degree optics. THANKS! :)

60* optics would be very powerful but have smaller spread. The 80* would have more spread and less power. It all depends on how deep the tank is and how high you mount them.

Okay, so has anyone installed the RapidLED 12 LED Par 38 bulb on their tank yet? I have a 72 gallon bowfront reef tank, well the reef part is in work, I have a kenya tree coral, green star polyp, some zoa's, and one SPS frag. I want to supplement my T5 set up. If I buy two of these, can each bulb provide enough light for 24x18x17 dimension? I was thinking about going with 80 deg. optics, I want my SPS near the top of the tank...

I have 5 sitting in a box currently until I figure out how I want to mount them. If they are anything like the other rapids they will completely replace a halide with good spread. I have 3 rapids and 2 boost over a 75 and it has very high lighting. I use 60 optics. Two of these bulbs would power the entire tank on their own.

I have 5 of the old Rapids and one of the new ones over my 90 gallon tank.I would say that you will need three of them over the 72 gallon tank. I had 4 of the old ones over my 40 gallon breeder tank. Remember that they are not driven at the 3 watts.

This is an interesting thread. I saw someone post a par30 bulb for sale recently and decided to read up a bit. Like the other bowfront owner posting "recently" here, I'm wondering...
1) how many par bulbs would be needed to supplement T5 lighting, and
2) what optics would work best

I've got a 46g bow...36" L x 16" W (in center) x 21' D. There is a center brace. I have two Sunlight Supply 2x39w T5 retro kits I got used and that I'm still cleaning/tweaking to be mashed in my tight little hood....*&@! end-mounted plugs.

I was thinking I could either use only one 2x39w T5 with a couple of par30/38 bulbs...or go all out and do...

-2x39 T5
-2 x par30 with 80-degree optics (maybe par38, but they take more space)
-2x39 T5

hmmmm...thoughts?

I've also been told at least once to just DIY 12 cree LEDS in a strip...but I'd rather buy sockets than solder. And unfortunately, I don't think my 2xVHO will also fit in the hood with 4x39 T5...as was planned.

2 PAR 30 7x3W should be enough.

However, since you say the canopy is tight, do you have enough height for the par bulbs? They are very tall.

If not, consider the Bar type LEDs a 36" 12x3 LEDs fixture ones is only like $200-$250 range. That's like 3 PAR bulbs' price or 2 expensive brand PAR bulb.

I would add LED strip lights. PAR bulbs will take up too much space and may require you to raise your hood up. Their spread is not great, even with 80* optics.
