Paracentropyge boylei "Peppermint Angel" & Centropyge abei "Abe's Angel" - Waikiki

I had the pleasure of going with my wife here this past week and spent about 2 hours watching them. Here are some photos I took of their display tank. Both are extremely rare, the Peppermint only two known to have been collected in the world. The Abe's Angel, only one in captivity. Both at the Waikiki Aquarium. I must say the Peppermint in person is unbelievably colored. The Abe's also very unique. Both are found in extremely deep waters, much farther than any recreational diver could go.

The peppermint is now eating all sorts of foods according to the aquarist I was asking questions... flakes, mysis, mixed gel they make, brine, basically everything. How exciting! The Abe's they've had for some time now and accepts everything as well. The tank is kept currently at 72 degrees as these fish prefer a bit colder water than what are tanks are accustomed to. If I remember correctly, the Peppermint was collected at +- 350 feet off of Tahiti and the Abe's was collected off Palau at below 100 meters.

Their tank mates include a Foxface Rabbitfish and a wrasse of some kind. The tank had a mix of corals as well.

****How do you post videos again? Youtube or Photobucket. Enlighten me so I can share the awesome video I took.

Only thing I forgot to take with me to the Waikiki Aquarium was a net and bag for a rare souvenire... oh well I guess I'll let others that visit the aquarium enjoy them as much as I did.

So here you go. Any questions I did ask the guy a ton so I can add to the thread as we go. It was surely a treat.

Nice pics, but there have been more than two peps collected. Just two in captivity, that we know of. Last video I saw on them one of the Aquarists said they might get another boylei. I think a narcosis got sent there as well.

Oh Woops thanks for the correction. Awesome well these looked plump healthy and happy.

I believe there are 4 peps in captivity right now. One more in Japan and another in NYC. Not to mention there are most likely a few more out there.

the Waikiki director said he gets phone calls offering $30K for the peppermint.

heres a nice vid about the two angels.

WOW, If I only lived in Hawaii I could see both these fish there.
Unfortunately, I do not live in Hawaii...

Sincerely,
Matthew

I believe there are only 2. There was one caught recently but it died shortly after. 2 guaranteed in captivity, maybe 1 more, but im pretty sure just 2.

such a nice fish. They are much like multibars or venusta... but worse, because they are 300-400 feet!!

It is uploaded by BlueHarbor(japan) ?

Yes, Blue Harbor is a place out of Japan. The store owners are world renowned for collecting extraordinarily rare fish. You can get on their website and regularly find extremely rare fish for sale in the 8-15k range. If anybody had a Pep Angel ever for sale it would be them no doubt.

Yes. Koji took the video of the peppermint at the aquarium. There are only two alive in captivity at this time. One by a private hobbyist in japan and one at the aquarium.

And there is one on New York City, at least it was still there last year. I have seen the fish twice.
