paulthomas' 400 Gallon Reef Build

I'm hoping to have a large tank again someday and seeing your build has reminded me of all the preplanning and preperations that need to be taken. Your tank will be amazing and I'm looking forward to seeing the end result. Great job so far!

Nice to see you are making progress Paul. I have not been on RC in a few months now. Busy summer.

Looks like I have some catching up to do and also looks like your tank turned out great! Congrads!

Now hurry up and get that bad boy running!

Thanks Doo. :) Progress is really slow. I was hoping to get back to it today. But with shopping with my wife and kids today (always an 8 hour fiasco), working late tonight and going to a fair tomorrow, it looks like I won't be able to get on it till Sunday. :(

Watching this build with interest bud

Thanks, bro. I've got a couple "cute," little ideas, but nothing major. After seeing some of the build threads here, I don't think I'll live up to 90% of them. :o ;) Some of them are pretty incredible. I suppose it comes down to how well our tanks do with life in them. But that'll be a challenge for me since I've never had a reef tank.

Aw man. Your post embarrasses me. :o :D I haven't done much yet. But I really appreciate the kind words.

I really need to get my a$$ in gear.

BTW, sorry for all the posts. I'm using my iPhone, which isn't the greatest for multiple quotes. It's a PITA really.

Since I'm logging in again to RC I thought I'd check out your build. You're going to have quite the nice set up - can't wait to see it up and running. Using the pond liner is a great idea, plus a frag tank. I wish I had the expertise to hook those things up like some of the more mechanically inclined!

How do you like the BK? What model to you have? Eventually I'll need to replace my BM250 - it's had too many start-up issues for my liking, though it does pull well.
It does make me cringe to put down all that $$ - but it is probably the most important piece of equipment to have.

Thanks for the kind words. :)

I decided to not use the pond liner. I'm afraid that the thin fiberglass would eventually crack and grow around the bulkhead hole. A Rubbermaid stock tank is easier to use. I've got a 100 and a 150. I'm probably going to go with the 100 and sell the 150.

I have the 300 Internal. I've run it with vinegar and water and have to say that the Red Dragon pump creates an insane amount of tiny bubbles. The Vertex cone skimmers (fabricated by Royal Exclusiv - Bubble King) look very sweet and are a fraction of the cost. They also use Red Dragon pumps.

I could see why you might not want to go with the pond liner with the unkown of how it will hold up over time. I would have like to have used a rubbermaid stock tank (love the water volume) but then went with the easier design route of acrylic.
Funny you mention the vertex skimmer made by royal exlusiv. I'm interested in the royal exclusiv alpha 250 cone skimmer. I would love to get one now, but will hold out until I need to replace another sicce pump on my BM.

Yeah, if your BM is working fine, I'd stick with it until a new skimmer is needed. Then again, if dealers are still offering a discount on the Alpha skimmers...

I think your basement set-up is pretty sick. I love the clean, uncluttered look. The RM stock tank is big and bulky IMO.

^^^thanks for the link. That's the site that I was checking - as I've used them too and like PA.
I would like to get this while it's got a little price break....but I need to broach the subject with my husband.

Just checked. It looks like the Alpha skimmers are still on sale and include free shipping:

I posted a PA link because I really like those guys and I've bought quite a bit from them.

Great way to go Paul, I love my Alpha, I've got the 250 and it's GREAT!

Btw, my Ehiem mod on the Vertex Zeo-Reactor is going strong and quiet as ever!

Keep us updated, I know you're taking your time but I'm watching with anticipation. :celeb3:

Can a wife have a "Honey Do List?"

I debated selling my 300 Internal at one point and getting the Vertex 300 to replace it. But that was kinda silly. I haven't used it yet.

I'm going to do the mod since I have a 1250 laying around. A friend said it was unnecessary, especially with a basement sump, but what the hay. :D

I'm really not finding much time to get things done. But I'll see what I can do. :o ;)

Cute.
My dear husband (not being a reef fanatic) doesn't understand the need to upgrade when the current skimmer is doing pretty good.:p

Liken it to something he would want but doesn't really need. :D Being a guy, I'm sure that's a pretty long laundry list. :D
