Pencil Wrasse thread

Elite, dont worry just yet, well, dont worry enough to destroy your tank... Mine was out the first day, then it was in the sand for 2 days. Then it was only out a couple hours before lights out for a week. Now it's out all the time, but just know that yours could be adjusting...

Yes, these wrasses bury themselves in the sand when frightened or sleeping. Many other wrasses share this habit as well (not all, for example fairy wrasses dont).

So who said this one is hard to keep?? :D .... Made me worry so much...

My fish is very active now. He eats anything that I put in the tank. Love him :)

Any ideas how big this fish will get guys?

They get just under 4 inches.

Congrats on 2 months with the pencil and hopefully you'll have him for many more :) . Just know that you're not out of the fire just yet ;) . Some people can keep these fish for up to 6 months with them being outgoing swimmers and eaters, but at 6 months in some cases they just quickly go downhill - or so I've heard. Mine is at the 6 month mark now and is doing good as ever, even in spite of his little jumping incident a few weeks ago. His tail is growing back nicely now...

I guess we have to see what happen 4 months from now huh... Unless something happen to my tank, I'm sure it will be OK :p ...

So which fish store did you get your wrasse Lukfox??

I had one in QT for a couple of months before it died. It seemed healthy. I think I stressed it out. I was trying to catch a yellow coris wrasse to move to my display tank and kept digging up the pencil in the process. After that it hid for 4 days then came out to die.

Dolphin Pets <--- great place with healthy fish and coral :)

Nickiwit, sorry to hear that :( . They do stress awfully easily : (.

Well what the heck.. wouldya know it? 6 month mark and I just found my pencil dead... He was swimming around seemingly happy just 15 minutes ago... He was eating, active, never got sick ever, and was just a good fish. And now he's gone and I really cant explain why.. all other fish, and coral as well, still look good... I feel sick and this stinks :( . RIP little pencil...

I have a pencil head wrasse. He loks exactly like the one that elite posted. I see him about 1-2 times a week. Ive had him for almost two months now Very shy but gorgeous.

Oh dang... what the hell... Hope I'm won't die like that.. That's really suck LukFox..

Yeah, just dont jinx yourself :( ... dang..

Update: Today I lost an urchin and that told me that it wasnt any stupid mark in time that did in the wrasse. So I tested for everything and got great results - ammonia/nitrite/nitrate tested at 0, pH is 8.3, etc. And then I got to salinity and the refractometer tested at a terrible 1.031! :eek2: Cant believe I let this happen.. something so basic :( . So now I'm working on lowering it slowly and hopefully I lose nothing else.. I cant believe everything else looks fine and even the foxface is a bright yellow still  .

Sorry if I scared you Elite with my last couple posts. It wasnt the fault of any "time limit", it was mine. Good luck with your pencil!

Aww that's ok, I think I'm going to avoid pencils for at least a little while :) . They sure are pretty though ^_^ !

:sad2: :sad1: :sad2: Found my fish today.. Not in the tank but on the floor :sad2: :sad1: :sad2:

Im bringing this back from the dead as this is the only dedicated Pseudojuloides thread.

My LFS is offering some "pink pencil wrasse" I believe its Pseudojuloides cerasinus. I held off on purchasing one because i've never seen one before and knew nothing about the genus. I think I mite go back and purchase one as they looked very healthy and my 110 gallon is still very understocked. Any suggestions before purchase?
