Peninsula Style Look-Down Build

Well with the start of the new month coming, i thought it would be a good time to start my first ever build thread from the beginning.

I decided a while back that i want a slightly larger tank, and a lookdown type reef. The 18 gallon rimless just isnt working out for me. (i just want to be able to look down on the corals... mostly a personal preference thing. )

Anyway here are the specs:

Tank:
30 breeder AGA tank
Glass divider to create a sump in the back (about 5 inches x 18 inches x 12 high for skimmer, heater and return pump, and a place to mount korallia 1s).

Filtration:
Live sand
Live rock (very minimal)
small skimmer (a piece of junk that i fell in love with. at least it isnt a seaclown)

Lighting:
luminarc mini reflector
250 watt radium 20k SE bulb
2-4 powerbrite 460 strips

Livestock:
Various high end corals, a large zoo garden, and a ric garden (eventually) and a few SPS. But mainly LPS.
Clean up crew

fish?!?

Other than that... thats all
More to come later.

PS
Gmaquarium, I'll see if the tank can be picked up this weekend. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Also thanks to mike for making this upgrade possible.

lastly, The 18 rimless is still available (t5ho light w extra geissman and an ATI bulb, 5.5 gallon tank for sump, and full plumbing included). There has been some interest but no solid deal yet. (just throwing it out there without having to make another thread).

first update

Thanks Mike(filly) for helping out with this. since I'm not home right now (in albany at college), mike helped me order the first new coral for the new tank (also happening thanks to mike).. Glad to have such great people in URS.

SEA SPONGE

on a more serious note, hopefully things will get rolling once this project actually gets started. Any ideas on how to make glass black.. that is IN water?

the sea sponge is not in my tank, and i hope it never will be.

If its the trach you are speaking of, well its not in my hands yet. (we (mike and myself) opted for it to be shipped out in 7 days, since this week is just too busy).

From what I was explained it sounds like its going to be a cool looking system. Good luck with the build, I am looking forward to seeing the progress.

Maybe look into getting the glass tinted?

Ya. Most tints out there is nothing but a plastic coating on the glass. You may want to ask how the glue the film to the glass tho?!?!

good point... i know there is the stick on stuff. but i wonder if saltwater will corrode it... or just wear it right off

I have seen glass places do a frosted glass on mirrors and stuff. Its usually grey in color. Call around and see if there is a darker version.

Ah its been decided.

I think im going to make the false wall, and the chambers behind it out of black acrylic.

Now the real question is...

does anyone know where i can get black acrylic (1/4 inch or 3/8)?

thanks,
dan
