people with their tanks set up on carpet

So I recently moved to a new house and tile space is limited. The space where my tank is wont accommodate a bigger tank and I want to upgrade. My only option would be to put it on carpet. My concern is that the carpet in front of the tank will get nasty and smell from water dripping on it whenever I do anything with the tank. Do you guys have any issues with this. Thanks

Brian

I use a decorative rubber mat my wife picked up from Pier1, has fish on it lol, just in case, otherwise a towel will do you just fine.

Yes a towel will work. I believe there is something out there called an aquamat or something like that. It supposed to soak up the water far beyond what a towel can soak up. (no it's not a sham wow). I believe it's made by kent or something. Check out the tank maintenance sections of the big online retailers.

I use a leftover piece of scrap carpet - I keep it rolled up behind the tank so it is always there for use. For larger spills - I have a hoover steam vac that has saved me many times.

My tank has been on carpet for 7 yrs. overflowed the sump once. Always put beach towel down when changing water, The carpet is dirty in front of the tank because all of the grandparents stand there and watch the fish. There is no odor or anything like that.

I went out and bought 2 beach towels, I use 1 for the water change buckets and the other as a backup if the other gets too saturated.

In all reality, repeated SW spills on carpet isn't too bad, in my experience stains and mold are less likely to develop from a SW spill then a FW spill. I had my old 75 Gal on carpet for a few years, and as a new-by you can imagine how much water made it's way to the floor. I pulled the carpet up to put down new flooring last year and there wasn't a trace of mold and the carpet was hardly stained underneath. I'm sure there is chemistry behind it, but I don't know it....probably has to do with oxidation or something.

I take care of some tanks in houses I can`t even imagine how much they cost- I use contractors heavy duty dropcloth that has a rubberised backing.

I have had a 120 gallon reef tank on carpet for over a year now. I have changed my aquascaping around more then I would like to admit and have my hand in the tank every day since I started my 120 and had a 50 gallon before it. i knocked over two 5 gallon bucks one day about 3 months ago and have had no odors or stains. Thats with light colored carpet. Just try and prepare with a mat or towels.

I use towels to catch any spills and haven't had any problems. But recently I had a leak (the filter was leaking and it took me a day to notice) and at least a gallon (probably two) leaked out onto the floor behind the tank. I soaked it up best I could and there doesn't seem to be any damage. I don't think there would be any major damage unless a considerable amount of water spilled.

What color is your carpet?

Depending on the carpet color, you will need to be more cautious. Also, do you own or rent. Owning can require more of a responsibility.

My set up is on a carpet as well. I had a major sump leak that allowed 5g or so to be absorbed in the carpet. I was upset at first, but then just laughed..really hard. I live in an apartment that I plan to stay in for the next 3 years and figure that my deposit won't matter by then anyway.

My carpet is dark beige. Not white. So far no white residue. I use towels when changing the water.

I have a steam vac at the ready and use towels to, and no stains believe it or not I have a harder time getting my dogs **** stain off the carpet then a sw spill.

I have a plastic mat underneath my stand that extends about 4 inches on all sides which takes care of a lot of drips. A couple of times that my tank overflowed i didnt have to worry about any water getting underneath my stand.

iv got a 300 gallon tank with a 75 gallon sump placed right on the carpet and have had no issues and i spill alot of water. As long as its not to humid in your house u should be fine
