Peppermint Hog compatibility.

Hey, I'm having trouble with my 2 1/2" Peppermint Hog. It goes after every new fish added to the tank. Please let me know what kind of fishes I should try.

Tank is a 75gal. full of zoas and small anemones. I've got an ATB Econo
skimmer. Fishes: 1 Red Sea Sailfin Tang, 1 Green Chromis, 1 Watchman Goby and the Hog.

Please give me a list, so I can choose my next victim (just kidding!).
Thanks.
Grandis.

Are you talking about B. sepiacaudus? I've kept 2 in small, and larger tanks, and not had any aggression issues with either. Kept them with all types of fish from gobies, wrasses to tangs and the like.

Hello jd474:

Thanks for the reply!!!
Yeah, scientific name is Bodianus sepiacaudus. I've tried to place a small Royal Gramma in the tank yesterday and the hog almost killed him at once. My Green Chromis is hurt on the tail now. The other one died already. He doesn't bother the goby nor the tang.

Please let me know a list of the fishes you've had with it.

Anybody else?

I added one that was 2.25" back in March '09 then two more (2" & 2.25") in Nov '09. Initially the established hog was chasing the new additions but the new ones appears to paired of and started defending their territory.

They get along with tankmates without any problem which are mostly angels, butterflies, one trigger and 3.5-3.75" Cuban hogfish.

Here's a pic of pair (in the middle) that was added in Nov with the established on the left

Hey, nice! Thanks for your post!!
The stablished one of yours look like mine. It's probably older than the other 2, right?

I Can't have any angels nor butterflies because of the zoas.

I think that if I can get fishes up to about the size of the Hog that will be easier then.

What about Wrasses? Like the Flame Wrasses?

Does anyone keep them with Cardinals, Mandarins and so?
Please keep posting...

Grandis.

Yes, the established hog is a good 1/4-3/8" bigger but the new additions are establishing and no longer take any crap from the bigger one. I've a Wrasse Bass and Exquisite Wrasse without any problem. I've added 3" Coral Beauty and 3-3.25" Venustus angels without any problem with the hog. I didn't know how big their mouth is till I saw them taking in large pellets which all three hogs eat.

Please let me know a list of the fishes you've had with it.

Currently: Blueline Rabbitfish, Convict Tang, Yellow Eye Tang, Lawnmower Blenny, Mystery Wrasse, Randall's Goby, Target Mandarin, and a Harlequin Tusk. I've kept him 2 years (nearly 3" now), and have never seen any aggression with existing or newly added tankmates.

Have mine with the following with no problems at all:
3.5 inch Potters Angel
3.5 inch Venustus Angel
4 inch Mature Male Blue Star Leopard Wrasse
2 inch Swalesi Basslet
2 inch Possum Wrasse
3 inch Ring-Eye Jawfish
2 inch Circus Goby

No aggression at all with him to any other fish in my tank. When first introduced the BSLW got a little annoyed, he did a little posturing but not biting or chasing at all.

2" Swalesi Basslet? That fish has color patern similar to the Hog and supposed to be really peaceful!
I love that basslet!!

How big is the hog and how big is the tank?
Thanks a lot Sigmund!

Grandis.

I have one too. It's tank mates are:
Radiant Wrasse
Mystery Wrasse
Yellow Coris wrasse
Royal gramma
Clown fish
Bluejaw Trigger

No problem with mine either but the only fish to be added after the Peppermint Hog was the Bluejaw Trigger

Thank you so much SirToppemHat and printedpaper!
My second Green Chromis had to be removed from the tank with no tail.
It's very sad!
Now I have only the Goby, the Sailfin Tang and the Peppermint Hog in my 75gal.
The more strange is that the hog was the last addition to the tank. I had my Chromis' for almost 3 years with no problem at all.
The hog comes to still food from the goby, but the goby reacts and the hog goes away.

Clownfish?? WOW.

I had a Royal Gramma, as I posted before, that had to be removed with some damage on tail and fins after only 5 min. in the system. But it was smaller than the hog.
How big are your Gramma and the hog, printedpaper?

Please keep posting the lists with the sizes, if you can.

I'm taking notes, so I can choose some of your fishes and try them out.
Your lists are a huge help here.

Thanks a lot.
Grandis.

The Hog is abou 3 1/2 inches and the gramma is 2 inches but very fat. Would it be an option for you to remove the Hog for a week or two? Maybe rearange your rock work or both. Could you trade it in at your LFS and get another. Do you have alot of rockwork? If you don't have enough maybe the hog is just claiming his piece of rock and not enough for the others to claim. I have lots of caves and tunnels and crevises. Just a few Ideas.

Thanks very much for the ideas printedpaper!
Yeah, I was thinking about returning that hog to the store and getting another one later, but I couldn't get it in the tank, once it is very stablished and knows the tank very well. Besides, it was very hard to get that fish where I live, once the majority of the kinda "rare fishes" goes to other places in the US. I had to special order the Hog (just like my Assessor, gone because of the Hog!!). I really like my Hog and it's doing really well. It acts like a pet already and eats from my hand with the Sailfin Tang.

Well, I have my tank full of rocks all over and at the same time plenty of space for them to hide and swim. All rocks have zoas and to take them out is a major project.

The only reason I could get the 2 Chromis and the Gramma was because they were injured.
If I could catch my Hog I would place him in another temporary system for the time I'm adding the new fishes. Maybe that would work.

But... I believe that with the other fishes, from the lists above, and with a significant size, I'll probably have more success in future additions. Too bad I can't try butterflies and Angels because of the zoas.

See, my Gramma was only 1". that was a mistake, I guess. I'll try bigger fishes.

I really like the list below:
(One or 2 of the Liopromoma sp. and the rest of the list. Well, if I can get them here!!)
Liopropoma swalesi
Liopropoma mowbrayi
Liopropoma multilineatum
Liopropoma rubre
Pseudochromis flavivertex
Cirrhilabrus scottorum (Scott’s velvet, not the green)
Cirrhilabrus laboutei
Halichoeres chrysurus
Pseudocheilinus ocellatus (pink)

If you have Bodianus sepiacaudus please post your list of fishes with it and the sizes of all the fish. That will help me a lot to choose my list.
The more names, more choices for me to try find in the local pet shop.

Thanks,
Grandis.

A. Grandis,

Hogfish is about 3.5 inches and was in first. I first put them in together and the Hog chased him a bit and the Swalesi stayed up in a corner of my tank for the first few hours. I then netted the Swalesi, put him in a clear holding container in my tank with a few rocks inside it and kept him in there for 2 days. Everyone got used to him, and when I let him back in the tank the 2nd time, no one gave him a 2nd look (including the Pep Hog). Should have done this from the start, usually do.

In reality the hog is always out swimming in the front of the tank, out and about. The Swalesi on the other hand is constantly going in and out of the rockwork. So they really don't cross paths that much, and seem to not care about each other despite the similar body shape and striping.

Very good info. Thanks! Is that holding container any special that you've got? Where? If not, did you make yourself? Give me some tips, please.

Grandis.

Have you tried a fish trap? I've had very good luck catching fish with a trap. It's the kind made from acrylic with a drop door conected to some fish line. Bait them with some mysis and when it goes in drop the door. You could also use it for to holding container that Sigmund is talking about. If you don't want to buy one maybe your LFS has one you can borrow.

It sounds like you have done what you can and unfortunatly when we grow coral on rock our options are very limited. I've heard of others using the method Sigmund talked about with good success.

Thank you, I'll keeping trying.
Thanks to all of you!

Anybody else with suggested fishes for my list?

Cheers!
Grandis.
