I have an established 55 gallon reef. running 5 years + contents are 2 false clowns and rose bubble tip anemony, 2 blue green chromis, royal gramma, sunburst antheias and a sail fin tang. the problem is i keep adding peppermint shrimp to control aptasia and they always vanish who`s the culprit?:fish1: i`ve added 7 peppermint shrimp in the last 2 months i never see them and no change in my aptasia problem.

There are also several species of peppermint shrimp and not all of them eat aptasia, for instance here in FL there are 2 species, both nocternal so not unusual for them to hide in your tank, but one will eat aptasia, and the other wont, ever refusing them to starvation.

Have you tried Berghia Nudibrachs? They're really good for Aipts. They live to eat aipts. They breed in your tank and when babies hatch you can sell or trade them too. Only thing is once the aipts run out the berghia starve.

I have been having the same problem. I recently bought a colony of Zoo's that have a few minor aiptasia on it. I isolated the infected colony to my nano tank(out of my main reef) for treatment, and to hinder the spread to the rest of my reef tank. I bought 2 peppermint shrimp 2 weeks ago, they ate 2 or 3 aiptasia, but then disappeared. One week later I got 2 more, then later that day saw one dead stuck on the overflow teeth, and the other is nowhere to be found. I am wondering if there is a low amount of iodine or some other element(or lack there of) in my nano that the shrimp keep going into. There are no fish in the nano, just snails and hermits. It is an all-in-one tank I made that has a corner sectioned off for a refugium section that is full of chaeto. Any ideas? I may have to try the berghias, but was curious why the peppermints keep dying...thanks

Peppermints are a PITA anyway, if you have lps or softies. My vote is for berghias or maybe have a CBB fish come visit your tank for a few days. Bristletail filefish may eat them too.

One of my peppermint shrimp disappeared a couple days after I added him to the tank. I only have to clowns.

There is only one species of peppermint shrimp.

if you got lots of LR and/or just place for them to hide, mostlikely they are in there. in my 265gallon tank, i got lots and lots of hiding place, i got 6 Pep shrimp, the first 3-4 months, i didnt even see a single one, night or day, but a month or two go, i was so shock to see one popping in and out of a cave. and eventually, i see another one, (no its not the same one, cause i see them both) and then more came out, and since last Sunday, i see 4 of them hang around, and actually eating pellets, and oh yea, i dont see any more Apstasia =) so give it time, hopefully =) or maybe i just got lucky

with no results for aipastatsia

Do they do better in pairs? I read that somewhere and I only have one. I rarely see her as well. Thinking about getting her a friend.

with peppermint shrimp you need to be very careful you are not actually buying Camel shrimp as they look VERY similar.

How bad are camel shrimp? Do they nip at softies that much? Was thinking about getting one. They really do look similar in person, but have a more vibrant color.
