Petco Gigantea

Good job like always. You find these much to often.

nice score on Petco gigs. I went to petco last night to pick up a cleaner for my angel and i saw at least 2 gigs in the tank, $39 with a special 25% off this entire week (that would be $29 for each "brown" gig) i decided not to get them as i dont want to give myself more work and be up to my neck with gigs :) and also they are not the color i want, purple, blue or green :)

I went to Petco after work again today. I saw this little guy and jut have to pick him up. I an starting a new 65 gal at work. That is where he will go once I finish with QT. He is only slightly biger than a silver dollar. The cup is a usual size coffee cup and the oyster shell is a small one.

Looking like you still have the touch with such things Minh. Thrilled to see you are still with it. /inspired.

This little guy is well bleached. No treatment. I have him in my version of Gigantea Spa. I fed him a tiny piece of salmon today and her ate it quickly. He is currently under a Radion 2 Pro, 100% right above him about 1 foot from the water and he is about 4 inches or so under the surface. I think he got plenty of light but since he is so small and so bleached, I did not want him to go without food for very long. I will do feeding daily just a tiny amount, about 4 small mysis worth. Will see how he will do. I am fairly optimistic about this guy since he is very sticky and eating. I give him 2 weeks, if continue to bleach I will do zoos transplant.

If an anemone lost all of his zooxanthella, he cannot recover unless he take in some zooxanthellae from the environment. There are quite a few species of zooxanthellae. Many of the ones that live in anemones and corals are obligates symbiotic so they are not in the environment, at least in too large of numbers.

I do zooxanthellae transplant by taken a few tentacles of healthy anemones (Gigantea in this case)stuff them inside a piece of food and feed this to the bleached anemone. It is easy to get an tentacles from heathy Gigantea. Just stick a finger to the tentacles and when I pull away, I end up with several stick to my finger.

I went back to where I grew up and visited the local Petco. They had 3 big gigs. They all looked healthy. To bad it was an 8 hour drive back home.

My Petco had two "carpets" last week for $29 ea. Looked healthy but hard to tell color since they have crap lighting on their tanks. One was over 12" and lighter in color and the smaller one was around 8" but quite a bit darker. Honestly the color looked more gray than green.

He ate a little bit each day for 2 days and seem healthier and grew a little (or just enlarge once he get accustomed to the Anemone Spa). Tentacles still too short. In person, without the blue cast from the LED, he is completely bleached with white/green tinted tentacles. I hope he will be light green.

Picture just now. The orange speckles are poo, what leftover from the salmon pieces that I fed him the last 2 days. That is one anemone, not two. The main picture taken through the viewing box while the anemone L upper corner is the same but through the surface of the water.

They often have Haddoni for sale. Only rarely Gigantea are available

Very nice. I got a haddoni from Petco a couple months back. Doing great at this time, It is still has its foot in the coffee mug. Don't know if this is bad or not. Now I'm looking to get a gig. I will have to visit Petco more often.

I got too much light on the anemone. He is not deflating but get smaller during the day and extend more at night. Eating well. Today, I will lower him some so he will not get as much light. Hope this will keep him extended more during the day.

Here he is this PM. Moved a little further away from under the light and a little lower. He is looking good.

My heater thermometer is off. While working to re-arrange him in the tank, I notice that the temp is a little cool. I guess i was experienced enough to tell that the temp is a little low even when the digital controller read 81 degree. I break out my new controller and put it in. That thermometer read 74. After recheck with my DT which read 81 degree by another controller, I find that my Anemone Spa was not even close to accurate. Anyway, I change the controller and now the temp of the tank is really 81 degree. He seem a little better, even if he seem good before.

This is a accurate colored picture of this anemone. I think he is completely bleached. I do the zoos transplant this weekend. I am not trying to prove anything, just want him to recover as soon as he can. Completely bleached or not he will not be hurt by a transplant. It can only help. If he does not need it, then at least he got a little nutrition from my other Gigantea's tentacles

I fed him a Stomatella snail last night. He ate it quickly. Orther than bleach, he is doing very well. I will do a zoos transplant for him this weekend. I will expect his color will start to return in about 10 days, which is the usual time for zooxanthellae to return after transplant. he continue to grow a little (at least increase in size). His diameter is still smaller than the diameter of a normal size coffee cup. He was only between a 50Cent and dollar coin when I got him from Petco a week ago on 8/24/2015.
If I am trying to proof that he is completely bleached, I would wait maybe 2 months to make sure he is not regain his zooxanthellea before transplant. But as I posted earlier, I am not trying to prove any point, just want my anemone to be healthy.

BTW, the view count keep on going up so I assume that there are interest in this thread, even if nobody post anything.

Here is a picture of him the day after he ate a Stomatella snail. The amount of food I feed him every few days is about the size of a Stomatellae snail.

Looking good! Thanks for the transplant explanation-I'm learning all kinds of good stuff about anemones from you.

You are quite thorough and clear in your posts, other than "Great job!" I don't have much to say :) I am following and appreciate you documenting the process.

Thank you.
