Pete's 110 build

I had the ozone unit up and running for a bout a week and was seeing some nice results on water clarity and skimmer performance. The trates all seem to be under control, though not sure if ozone helped on the front end of the waste process through. I took the ozone off line after I noticed some slight brown splotching on my yellow tang. After some research I believe it was caused by the GAC I was using. I went with a lesser quality and found several people ran into the same issue so it's back to ROX for me. The tang cleared up in just a few days.

The undata is making a strong come back and growing over the dead spots

Your colors make me happy and bummed out at the same time. Do you think it's the excess dust from "cheaper" carbon that causes issues with Tangs? Or could it be a chemical thing...?

From what I understand it’s the dust, and tangs are very susceptible to it. It apparently is some form of HLLE. The pictures I saw were spot on with what was going on with my yellow tang, I’m just glade I caught it before it got worse. Now I wish I took the time to take some pictures but it cleared up faster then I thought, maybe 2-3 days since turning of the reactor flow.

I ran ROX in the tank before and never had an issue. Randy Farley has commented on several threads about his findings and experiances typical with what I just experianced. So, I guess I'm just another notch in the GAC vs Tang gun :)

I loaded that reactor about 2/3 full so a lot of GAC is going to go to waste. I guess I can use the stuff I got left in my 29g and see how it does as it only has mushrooms and a couple clown fish.

And thanks for the comments on the coral colors, I'll just add just about everything looks good under Royal Blue with a slight tint of white LED's :)

Ha, you're making me want to upgrade to LEDs. :D A while back I ran into the same problem with Lignite Carbon. Either I didn't rinse it thorough enough or maybe it's just the normal amount of fines that come from being in the reactor but it did bother my Yellow Tang. Seemed to even irritate it's gills, causing some redness and irritation.

Hi Pete. I am new to Reef Central, but not really new to the reefs. I am a huge fan of your patience and success with your reef. I have read everything up-to-date, however, there is still one method I am unable to grasp.

I have recently bought a Sony HDR XR-260 which is the newer model of your HDR 150. I have the one touch feature on my camcorder as well, for white balancing, but everytime I put a sheet of paper adjacent to the aquarium, the white balance does nothing, and everything is still blue/purple. I do have LEDs (Ecoxotic Par38s) with varying water motions, which cause shimmer. Do you think that the shimmer is distorting my video quality? Also, I have my tank background painted blue. I really would like to capture some of my corals but I am getting a little frustrated with my incompetence while using my camcorder.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. If possible, a video of you using your camcorder?

Once again, I am a huge fan of your aquarium skills.

That undata reminds me of an uncut pie sitting on the counter cooling. The more you stare at it the more you want a piece. :lolspin: That acro is simply amazing though.

thanks and welcome to RC :)

It's not always a given that you will get a good white ballance by using a white paper next to the aquarium. Often room lighing will throw it off, so I find I have to turn off all the other lights in the room. If that still wont get it close (still too blue) I can at least put the paper on the other side of the tank to get a decent white ballance setting.

In cases where the LED's are real dim I may open the hood and set the paper on my cross brace then reclose the hood to take pictures. In these extreme blue conditions the white ballace will almost completely take out blue leaving the areas a purple shade when filming.

HTH Pete

I saw your vids on YouTube, simply amazing. Do you just use that camcorder or is there a camera you use also? I have LEDs and i just can't get good pictures with my blues on.

Well I guess I'll be buying that camcorder then! Love the tank, I watched the new videos, They are great.

Thanks - and looking forward to some future pictures, I'm still loving the ony for both it's video and still capabilities.

---------------
I picked up a couple new acroporas; a Acropora Hoeksemai & Acropora Abrotanoides. Both corals are beautiful specimens but this morning the Acropora Hoeksemai did not look too good. the polyps were out but it looked like it took a lot of skin damage. I finished acclimating and treating it late last night so I didn't get a good look at it and this morning I only saw it with a flashlight so I'm keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that it makes it.

Fascinating build and fantastic pictures. I just finished reading the entire thread and I love what you've done.

I'll be putting together a tank in the future ( still in the research and prepare mode). One of the things I love about your tank is the wide variety of everything, even in the sump and fuge. You've mentioned that it's important to have that biodiversity and you said you did it by gathering lots of life on your live rock and then keeping a good balance. Did you do anything else to seed your tank with those things, like get some dusters and place them in places they would thrive, or did you just get lucky with your live rock?

Again, love what you're doing and I really appreciate the time you've taken to share so much valuable information.

Woah, somehow my subscription was deleted. Back on track now. :D Great new vids, the green birdsnest is incredibly healthy looking. Hope the new coral makes it through OK. ;)

glad your back and thanks

sorry i cant scroll through 40 pages to find out what camera you use, can I get the name and model?
no problem - it's a SonyHDR-XR150 but I think it has been replaced by a newer model

Where's the new frags? The ones I ordered should be here tomorrow.

I haven't been able to grab any decent pics yet but here are the Live Aquaria pics

I just about killed the A Hoeksemai, I think it got a strong (undiluted) dose of Revive as I was treating them.

Just checked out the price of a Acro efflorescens.. 500$? Pretty steep!

hehe - maybe I got a deal at $40 :D

Hoek's and Abrotanoides always stand oout to me so much whenever I browse DD, I love them! I dont know why I never pulled the trigger on a Hoek, but I did by a very nice Abrotanoides once only to have it lose the beautiful red tips and ultimately RTN within a week. I hope yours does much better!
