Pete's 110 build

After viewing your latest FTV, anyone own a shrink gun? I want to walk through the peaks and valleys of that EFFLO, like walking on the moon ... :hmm3:

I am pretty jealous of that millie, and that favia scares me, since I just picked one up. Beautiful. Does the millie have a name, so I can keep an eye out for one like it?

You are a pipe fitting macgyver sir. Looks like a cool little setup.
hey thanks - I actually watched that show back in the days

Hot dang!! Excellent job on the recirc mod Pete. If this works I'm definitely going to do this on my SMR1. Let me know if that MJ1200 is enough at full throttle to keep the pellets suspended too.

Put me on the list. :D

So far it's working okay but I'd like a little more action. I need to go to my LFS today and get a new impellor as I had to use an MJ 900 impellor in the MJ 1200 body so I'm sure it's not working at full potential.

Will do, I need to send you a care package

Keep an eye on the Tangs for adverse reaction to np pellets as I had same thing happen to my Tangs as this RC member. My pellets were not tumbling enough and effluent not routed directly to skimmer input. I'll eventually put online with much more vigilant monitoring.

hey thanks for the insight, I had no idea and as soon as I saw your post I went and checked the tangs. So far no issues, how long did it take to see the side effects?

You can read my mind; I often visualize the same thing. There's no question in my mind as to where James Cameron got his inspiration for Pandora.

Sadly, it only took 3-4 days and I gave the rash to the fish twice to prove it was bio-pellet related or my failure to implement properly. :headwally: The good news, pellets offline and rash gone in same number of days. All my tangs turned five recently and are fat and happy.

Here is one of my two yellow tangs with the rash.

Just read the whole thread !
nice job and thanks for sharing !

thanks, I'll continue to keep a close eye on them but so far other then a couple corals there have been no real issues

here's a quick update on the Nitrates
reading yesterday was 1 maybe 2ppm

corals that seem to be affected
Montepora Undata - not better yet but not that much worse. I just hope with slowing the flow down from a roar to a trikel it will start a comeback. No other Monteporas seem to have been affected by the high No3 or bio pellets

Gorgonia - the orange one continues to wither, it ws growing and had been getting fatter since I bought it so something has turned for the worse as far as it's concerned. The other 2 NPS gorgs are actually looking better since the No3 dropped, maybe the orange one liked elevated No3 and the others didn't - this one has me baffled

Acropora - as a whole they never realy seemed to be affected with high No3 or the bio pellets. My Efflorence has a couple spots on it ut I'm 99% sure its from other corals breaking off and landing on it. Two of the spots are allready healing the third is new so I'm still keeping a close watch on it to see what happens. Over the course of events a couple acroporas seemed to get a little pale (maybe lower nutient levels) but other then that appear to be normal.

Chalice - 3 of the 4 are doing great, the one has some burnt edges but the rest of the colors are actually better then ever. This may be elevated an elevated Alk while using bio pellets issue.

Since I moved the bio pellet effluent from the return pump section to the skimmer section my cheato seems to be browing out some. The caluerpa appears normal. I don't have the effluent directly hooked to the skimmer so I'm sure a lot of it is going straight toward the fuge so this could be a reduced nutrient issue as the bacteria count is probably elevated there or it could be a bacteria die off related issue.

the TLF reactor mod is holding up great, I would like a little more flow out of the MJ 1200 but I couldn't find the proper impellor so the 900 impellor will just have to suffice until I get by a LFS or place an order online.

A video I posted 1 year ago has exceeded 100,000 hits. Looking back I see some great growth in some corals and not so much in others. What surprizes me the most is the polyp extension I had back then. The chips and the meteor shower were way fuzzier then they are now. Maybe a hermit crab or fish nipping issue, or lights as I changed then out since then, or maybe a Ca/Alk aditive, or pH, or other water related issue. Both corals still have great colors and are growing but just don't have the same PE. This video was also in the height of my bryopsis issues so you will see fuzzy flowing stuff between all the colorful corals :)

Absolutely remarkable. I got lost in that video. :) This was your previous tank, Pete?

it's the same tank - just early on.

here's a not as pretty tribute to my 300g before the big leak...uggg

allthough the corals were awesome there was a constant battle against red bugs and AEFW

the coral picture at 4:00 became my Avatar :), but the picture at the end is the best (by Melev)

I'm wondering if bio pellets are behind this look. I never noticed the leading edge of an encrusting monte looking speckeled

Those videos are breathtaking Pete. Glad to hear most of the corals are doing great. Hopefully now that the mod is working you'll see a turnaround with the monti.

Hey Pete, I noticed in one of the videos you had/have an emerald crab. What's been your experience with them eating bubble algae and leaving your SPS (or other corals) alone. I'm considering picking one up this weekend. Been manually removing some bubble algae over the last week or two but wanting a little overnight backup. :D

Pete,

Love the videos and pics your sharing with us. Couple of those chalice shots are off the charts!

I picked up one of those spider type shrimp with the upside down triangle type body that you have to help control bristle worms. Great addition. I noticed it probing the sand with it's pinchers and wondered if it will harm my under substrate critters, such as nasarrius snails or the one sand sifting star? You had any issues? Thx!

Pete,

Those 15 seconds of kalk dosing when Tank PH is below 8.2, presume it's to a high flow area of the sump? What is the kalk flow rate? Drips per second? Using a dose pump or lift pump? I see a quick VIDEO coming if I'm lucky :spin3:

the Undata is getting worse in some areas but I'm still hopeful. I may shut hte bio pellets of for a week or so and monitor but haven't decided to go there yet

Emeralds will pick on SPS but from what I've seen it's more just a habitual picking. They will just park themself in an area and pick away at what ever is is in claws reach and sometimes it just so happens to be a coral. I have never seen any of mine in this tank or my 300g go after bubble algae specifically. They do eat the stuff but I can't say they go hunting for it. I had one in my 300g that would eat nori out of my hand though, when ever it saw me feeding the fish up the claws would go waving like "feed me semore", it trained me well :)

if you are referring to a arrow crab I never had an issue with them bothering things in the sand bed. Like most crabs they are opportunistic and may happen to grab something you don't want them too but overall I think they are a great tank mate. I always got a kick out of mine trying to catch mysis or cyclopseze as it floated by. There was no way it was ever going to catch one as it move by but it was hilarious watching it, reminded me of Mr Miyagi trying to catch a fly with chop sticks in the original Karate Kid movie

Yes it's in the pump return section of the sump, the pump is a mag 12 so it's moving quite a bit of water, I'd say it clears out in 10 seconds or so. The flow rate from the reactor is more a slow stream, I have a video some place on youtube, I'll see about reposting it. The TLF Kalc reactor I got requires a small pond pump (can't remember off hand the GPH) but it uses the pump flow to turn a sprinkler head looking device to stir and saturate the kalcwasser mix as it is dosing. The back pressure is enough to slow the flow to a trickle. An aqualifter type pump would not operate the stirrer properly.

Haha, too cool. I might have to pick one up and at least try it out. Some people say males tend to scavenge bubble algae better but I guess it hit or miss. Thanks for the info! :)

I don't know for certain but I think the males get larger then the females. It may be a different type crab but I've had some stay small (about 3/4") and other get larger (about 1 1/2")
this one is definitely female - they are pictures late at night of a mithrax fanning and dropping her young

she crawled out to the edge of a plate coral then proceeded to wave her lower flap open and close to fan the babies.
