Petes 270 project

I just read your previous post about your fish. That is a large bio load to add all at once. Make sure to monitor your parameters. I did something like that once and threw my tank into a tailspin. My nitrates shot up and for the first time I had a problem with ammonia. Some of my corals did not take the sudden change too lightly. What type of skimmer are you running on the system?

The skimmer is a Barr Aquatics, pretty industrial so things should be fine. Also the fish are all quite small. They just arrived and are going through acclimation. The Chrysurus Angels are amazing! I hope to add a few more angels in time. I have a variety of three in my 135 so hopeful that picking the right combination will allow about four or five.

Angel selection is a challenging pursuit. My other tank has Emporer, Majestic, and Coral Beauty Angels. They chase each other, but get along as well as the other inhabitants. Having several large angels in one tank can work, as many have done it, but you have to carefully select the combination.

"You know what they say, you play with fire and you are bound to".......Get really warm? Run out of wood? Toast some marshmellows? Burn the weiners? Cook some beans? Fry the bacon? Scorch the linens? Smoke the fish? What??????????

Thanks Chris. I just got back from Atlanta where I had the opportunity to attend the annual Saltwater U meeting and view the Atlanta Aquarium. The displays are fantastic! It is amazing the variety of fish you can have in a tank if it is big enough. Also got to meet some great people at the Saltwater U program and hear Anthony Calfo speak! They are hosting MACNA next year and it will be a great location.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------This is one very dorky looking fish! I did have a chance to see several adults at the Atlanta Aquarium this last weekend and they are absolutely amazing, so if this thing keeps eating like the pig that it is I will have one great looking tang in about 6 months.

Hey Pete,

It was nice to meet you at the Georgia Aquarium this weekend. Your tank looks great. Beautiful Angels!

Amy

Amy, Good to hear from you! The meeting was a real treat and hearing Anthony Calfo was great. My tank is slowly progressing, but I sure do need a better camera or a better photographer! I just placed an order for two Pyramid Butterflies, a Regal Angel and a Flasher Wrasse through Tropical Fish Outlet, so I am quite excited. These will be the last fish until I decide which Trigger to add, either Pinktail or Sargassum.

Yes, Angels are a gamble, but they are spectacular fish. Many large tank owners have been successful with large angels in reef tanks, but you have to have a lot of live rock to keep them satisfied and feed them adequately. My 135 has three angels and sps and lps corals, all together now for 4 years. The lemon butterfly was the biggest problem, but that resolved in a Kalkwasser overdose.

Just received my new vortech today and wow this thing is a major league water mover. The fish and corals are having a good time getting used to the increased flow. I think I will try running it at about half speed for just daylight hours and shutting it off at night. Is anyone using one of these on a simple timer? I plan to upgrade when the controllers become available, but for now simple dawn to dusk might be OK. Any suggestions?

Major Error!

Major Error!

I had received the last of my fish on my stocking list about 3 weeks ago, including a Regal Angel, a Pinktail Trigger and a small Clown when I noticed that the trigger looked bad. The thing ate like a pig, but color was bad. Eventually all three fish died. Within the last 48 hrs almost all of my fish in the 270 have developed the same illness, probably Marine Velvet. This is a hard way to learn the lesson about careful quarantining. This will be the last time I buy fish from Marinedepotlive. The rest of the fish for this tank have come from Tropical Fish Outlet and have done very well.

you will love that vlamingi. I bought mine at about 1 1/4", and within 5 months he was around 6 1/2", amazing growth. Nice tank, good luck.

I think you are correct, the vlamingi is a great fish, but it is one of the few left after the Velvet attack and it doesn't look long for this world. I had a great group of reef safe fish for awhile.
