I grabbed a dozen cloth baby diapers from the children's store here. They work great and are soft enough for acrylic tanks. I use them for just about everything (tank related;) )

Pete, you can use RO/DI water and a very soft cloth, like camera lens cloth or cloth diapers. I've used the reptile glass cleaner stuff from Franks Tanks without any ramifications.

thanks Marc - I'll have to look for some of that

I'm almost perplexed with the difference. I may have to swap sides tomorrow and take some more comparisons. My light rack is a little off center but..........

Also I'm wondering if having the bulbs in the reflectors at 45 degrees reflects the light more toward the front or away from the mogul socket. In this case toward the front left of the reflectors.

What perplexes you? (Gotta love that word...) It looks like the new bulb is shinier. :D Did you not expect it to be so? Your better reflectors will definitely make even an old bulb work better.

I guess after reading Sanjays latest, I did not expect that much visible change in one year bulb life. I bet the PAR must be up 20%

I would run the comparison again after a month of burn in. I bet the amount of diminished intensity to your eyes will make the difference less noticeable. Perhaps?

Pete, once you have a PAR meter, the guesswork will be a thing of the past.

I'd love to have one but that's an expense I just can't justify right now. :(

Your'e probably right Hop, the initial brightness may only be for a few hours maybe a hundred or so. I really need to read more of Sanjays stuff to get a better idea of what to expect.

After the main lights went out I flipped back on the actinic lights - these bulbs are going on 2 old years now, so I wonder how much more Pop I'd get if replaced. Anyway, I decided to take a few actinic only shots. I found that by turning on the flash but totally blocking the light with my hand the colors come out pretty true as you can see my hand in the blue tip stag picture.

and here are a few night shots about 30 minutes after all lights out (taken with flash of course). PE has just started coming out on some corals like the Chips and is already fully extended on others.

good news for today: :D

the lil chromis that could is still doing great

and DKH has been holding for the past few days in the mid 7's

Bad news for today;

Bad news for today;

I lost another wrasse. I just picked it up Saturday, it was doing fine, eating hanging out with the other fish, no one bothering him etc. It was about 5" long so pretty good size compared to other fish in may tank but I get home and find it dead.

I'm thinking my purple lobster or the banded coral shrimp must be finding them when they sleep in the sand bed and kill them. Anyone else experience this?

Ph had to be over 8.15 all day, it was 8.2 when I got home and went up a bit more. The 8am limewater dose didn't go, because the high Ph solenoid was shut all day. Maybe the fish death had something to do with it. :(

Right there with you. I've come to the conclusion that my tank is not wrasse safe:(

I've lost two in a month. Both were healthy, eating and doing well.

Hop - do you have any decent size, semi aggressive / opportunistic inverts like I do?

Yeah I have two brittle stars that are normally peaceful, but maybe wrasses taste good? One is getting about 15-18" across... Otherwise just the CB shrimp, who I don't think is the culprit. The only reason I suspect the stars is that one attached a wounded crab I had once...

I didn't even think of him, I have a large brittle star in the tank, so it could be a guilty party.

Sorry to hear about the Wrasse, Pete. My CBS was an evil (I won't say what I think of him on here) who constantly ate other inverts in the tank, went after any new coral and whenever a fish came near his cave he got really agressive so perhaps that could be the culprit.
