Looks like a gorg. I have a few that look like that except that they are brown.

The kole tang is still alive, still picking from the rocks. :( How long can a tang sustain himself on coraline algae?

mine is still fat as can be and I've not seen him eat anything other then picking on the rocks and overflows. As long as he's fat and picking (foraging) I wouldn't worry about it.

Jay - any update on the Kole?

With some of the PH swings I've been getting I thought I lost a nice sized feather duster I have in my sump/refugium. I had not seen the feathers for about a week and tonight I see this

not the best of pictures but I guess he shed his old set and is growing a new one

Occasionally I'll see post about hermit crab gatherings, I've had a few of them myself. Sometimes I think they are zoning in on the smell of something dead, but this looks like a conspiracy in the planning stage to me.

thanks moondog

I pulled the acropora austera tonight for pest inspection and a dip. A branch died off and I was pretty sure it was due to lack of light but wanted to make sure. After a good dip and turkey baisting I only saw a few asterinas and brittle stars.

When I put it back in the tank it decided to slime up just a little

With the main lights off and one of the 10ks on, the Mako Mille decided to show off its bright blue tips.

thats alot of slime.... but nothing compared to what a brain coral can muster up if you annoy them

that mille looks awesome under the actinics... is it the same one thats mostly pink under halides?

It may be, but a couple are starting to look very similar. That picture was taken under actinic and one of the 10k Reflex 400w on.

Here it is (Mako Mille) in a top down shot from last week under normal lights (250w 12k Reflux and actinic). As you can see the coloration looks very close to the Marc Mille on the right but the growth pattern is different. Marc's Mille also gets more pink highlights.

I'm always impressed with the coral collection, Pete. ;) Keep the pictures coming!

thanks crvz

caught another snail killer

I think this snail was one of about 8 of some so called Nassarius Snails I bought a while back. At the time I thought they looked suspicious. More grey then white but small and had the tube

I've found about 6 now, all have been about the same size, one was put in an overflow the other day and this morning I find this one trying to kill a cerith. Could be the same one but regardless hes fertilizer now

I think I found why I was having issues with my Kalc system clogging. Turns out maybe about 2-3 months ago I had some excess Kalc water so I just feed it into my holding tank, thinking it was harmless I never thought about it clogging a solenoid valve

Last night I noticed my system seemed very slow despite the aqua-lifter so I pulled the pump apart and it was working fine. Then I checked the reactor, no issues there either. So I checked the line from the holding tank to the pump, expecting some water would run out there was nothing or at least hardly a drip. I pulled the line apart and found that the solenoid although on or open was not letting fluid through. I looked at the end connectors and noticed they were caked with Lime.

I guess the heat of the valve and stainless internals with a port of less then an 1/8" gave the Kalc a place to build up.

So here is the solenoid getting a vinegar bath

here is the magnetic plunger that opens and closes the valve, its a little gunked up

and here is the body, you can make out some bubbles coming from the dissolving Lime.

That's one of the reasons I've got spare solenoids one hand. If you search for part 7877k5 at mcmaster, there are some nice 12VDC units available, but they don't look the same as yours. What scares me the most is that I didnt have to look up that part number. ;)

haha - that is bad

I did by 5 knowing I would want a spare or two, plus I had some different thoughts on what to do with some extras. But these things are definitely RO/DI water only.

looks like I'll end up having two on my Kalc system; high ph off and ATO

one on a water change system RO/DI fill device

I want to install one to be a bypass valve on my RO/DI hooked up to a timer

and considering one on a timer to my RO/DI, more as a back up to minimize gallons per day in case of a tube leak or ATO failure

so I may end up buying a couple more

here is where I got mine

I got a call from Ryan (SERVO) tonight asking how long my lights are on. I figured there was only one answer to that question so I said; "how ever long they need to be, coming over?"

He indicated he was with a couple of our guest speakers for Next Wave (think it was Borneman and Fenner - but not sure) So I said; well as long as they know the glass may be a bit dirty come on by. He called back a few minutes later and said they were going to call it a night and wanted to see some tanks tomorrow, so I'm off to clean the skimmer. I hope they get the opportunity to drop by.

That was Bob Fenner and Jake Adams, I'd bet.

That snail looks like a Whelk to me, and it needs to go.

Do you think one of the solenoids on that link you posted would fix my calcium reactor's regulator? Mine won't shut off any more, and I need a new one. Those weren't as expensive as some other sites I've checked.

the whelk is on it's way to becoming fertilizer

those solenoids should work just fine. they are for gas or liquid service. I take it you need a normally closed valve, 1/4" pipe thread?

Our local club held Next Wave 2009 today. It was a great hit. We had 4 awesome speakers, several vendors and had a great raffle.

I blew a large chunk of my Ca Reactor money that I was saving up on corals.

I picked up 3 Acans and a Favia from Zoanuts, These are may first Acans and Favia so I hope they do okay in the tank

I also picked up 3 ORA frags from one of our LFS (Franks Tanks). I got a Red Planet, Purple Passion and a Bellina

I also picked up a small colony of an unknown acropora that is a soft purple color with yellow tips from another LFS (Fish2Morrow)

I'll get some pictures up shortly but here are the acans taking a bath (like you can realy make then out )
