From Daily Herald:

Police were continuing their investigation Friday into why 600 fish were poisoned at a Schaumburg pet store.

According to police, an unknown poison was placed into either a fish tank or filtering system at the Petsmart store, 140 N. Barrington Road, between 7 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday.

Once in the tank or the filtering system, police said, the poison spread to all 127 fish tanks in the store, since they all feed into one another.

Police said the poison killed about 600 freshwater fish, which were valued at $3,000 combined. No specifics on the types of fish were given.

The manager at the Schaumburg store referred all questions to corporate offices in Phoenix, where officials said they had no comment, other than they are cooperating with the police investigation.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Schaumburg Police Department at (847) 882-3534.

If it had been Petco it would have been a bigger surprise then Petsmart. The fish at Petco would more then likely die anyway.

I wonder if some inexperienced employee did something by mistake.

That's what I was wondering... How did they know it wasn't just some sort of negligence? Wonder if a crime lab tested the water or something.

All it takes is one unwatched child, and no telling what went in. I hope they do an analysis of the water.

Same thing happened to a local around here a few years ago....Someone came over to buy some frags, apparently was either jealous of the set-up or didn't like the prices, or had a bone to pick with him and dumped something in his sump when his back was turned.....Toasted the entire system. He didn't know the guy, nor his real name...just that he drove a black pick-up truck. The guy left, a couple hours later, the tank took a crap.

People are truly pathetic sometimes.

Thanks Mike, now everytime I show up to a fellow reefers house, they are gonna take one look at my black pickup and not let me in to their house :) .

Seriously though, I can see someone being that upset with a corporation or a larger store (not that it is right to do this to a store), but I can't believe that somebody would do such a thing to another reefer. Un-freakin-believable.

I'm no business guy, but I'm pretty sure most pet stores are insured. I heard some stories out there that some owners would purposely burn down their store or kill livestocks in some kind of way, then they would get money from the insurance and like expand?? Think this store poison their fishes on purpose?

I *might* see a local mom and pop store do that but Petsmart is a huge corporation, they don't need the money from insurance to cover expansion costs. No way they did this themselves.
