PH ... how to bring it up.

Good morning -

PH issue - I've been having steady PH around 8.1-8.3 for the past few weeks and things have been looking good. I'm planning on adding a few soft corals this afternoon from a FRAG meeting and did some routine maintainence last night. I tested my water before the water change ... about 15% ... and tested the new water before replacing .. PH was virtually the same, around 8.2 ... after the change, PH had dropped to around 8.0, not unnatural, considering the light had been off for around 4 hours. Well, this morning, PH had gone as low as 7.8, and after the light has been on for about 4 hours again, PH is staying steady at 7.8 - - - I'm afraid that with my new livestock I'll be giving them too much of a shock, but I don't want to throw off the tank too much by trying to buffer the PH. What is the best 'natural' way to raise PH without another major water change ... or is that what I should look at, another water change before the meeting? I appreciate any help - Bagelz.

I actually put my trust in the LFS and got this one solved .. however, I'm a bit nervous about it because I was hoping to avoid supplements, but it looks like that is inavoidable at the time. I ended up purchasing a PH and Alk buffer ... my Alk is looking great (for the first time) and PH has been a steady 8.1-8.3 (I really need to pick up a digital tester, maybe next weekend) - new soft corals are looking great as well, but I'll have to wait and see how the next few weeks go.

Thanks for the site BTW.

Calcium and alkalinity buffer supplements are pretty much unavoidable for most tanks. Sounds like you've got this under control.

I think I do as well - the website you directed me to was excellent though, just what I was looking for - confirmed LFS advice. Thanks agian!

Get one with a separate probe, so you can see the display all the time, I have it display next to my temperature display. Two crucial parameters for every tank.
