pH probe questions / answers / help

looks like my pH probe might be dead- no settling movement in either calibration fluid.

It's over a couple of years old now.
I've never cleaned it. Maybe it's worth a shot. How do you clean pH probes?

If I need to replace it.... I have an Neptune AC jr. What replacement probes will work with a Neptune controller?

Do the BRS pH probes work?
Anybody reading this ever use a BRS pH probe?

TIA :wavehand:

I think you need hydrochloric acid, but I've heard vinegar works too. I'm guessing your two-year old probe is ready to move on to greener pastures... ;)

I'm no expert, but I do have one of the BRS probes (on a Milwaulkee meter) and it has been working no problem for about a month.

I have used a few of them over the years imo a few years without cleaning is pretty good. I have the brs and its worked for about a year so far. Now temp probes thats another story. they stink I have gone through thee in 4 years

The better probes have two little wires not one. They work by somehow mixing the mercury solution inside the tube with tank water, so the bulb can do whatever it does to make the reading. One wire probes are suppose to release the mercury solution into the water faster than those with two. They don't last forever. I used a BRS as a replacement because sometimes other needs demand the savings, but I would get a better probe if/when I'm able. IDK if the neptune uses a proprietary connection or not, but most ph meters use a standard connection. I clean with a soft tooth brush and a vinegar soak, the ports can get crusted over.

BRS works with AC Jr, used them twice. First BRS probe sat around for awhile before use and seemed to work for a while but then slowly drifted, and I was to lazy to recalibrate. The second one been in use for a couple months, and seems to be working pretty steadily. I plan to calibrate it in a few months to see if its drifting like the first one or if the first one went bad sitting around so long.

I just put in a pinpoint after two Digital Aquatics probes went south after 3 months each.

I heard mixed reviews on the BRS.

I had bad luck with the brs probe. Worked for a short while then went to a very low reading as cross checked with the pinpoint. BTW brs carries the pinpoint probe at a very good price . I've had good luck with those.

I clean rarely with a vinegar soak for an hour or so . Works without any harm, ime.

And this ineherent "relaibility" is why I don't use or trust pH probes. Finicky technology if you ask me.
I used to feel the same way.

Thanks for all of the input so far, it's certainly affected what I'm going to do.

Does anybody have any experience with the Milwaukee brand pH probes?

Yes. worked fine for a few years on the Milwaukee controller. Replaced it with a pinpoint probe since brs had them .
