phoenix MH same as aquaconnect???

i was just told by a reputable sponser on RC that the 14K aquaconnect is made in same place where the phoenix 14K is made, and that they are the same. only difference is the phoenix is meant to be distributed in the usa while the aquaconnect is not. is this true? if so i see no reason to spend $110 on an aquaconnect when i can get a phoenix for $70.
anyone know about this?
who uses either and how do u like them?

ive been using my phoenix 14k for a couple months now and have been very happy. The only thing i can compare it to is the AB20k. Ive had better growth, color, and PE under the phoenix.

JMHO

The 14K Aquaconnect and Pheonix 14K are one the same bulb.
Online stores found a direct supplier through Singapore I belive, thus making them cheaper. The Aquaconnect go to Germany than us, hence the extra cost.

I forgot to mention that I use Pheonix 14K and love them. Great growth and color. Beats out almost all 10k DE bulbs PAR wise.
Check my site to see them up and running.

I have actinic bulbs to go along with my Phoenix bulbs, but only run them the first and last hour of the photoperiod for the dusk/dawn effect. I find I don't need actinics for the tank to look 'right' (to me).

SunnyX,

How do the Phoenix bulbs look without the actinic supplementation?

I actually run two Actinic white bulbs. I find the Pheonix 14K's with the white VHO's to be the best combo.

Now if you want to run the bulbs without any VHO supplementation it will look white/blue. It is whiter than a Hamilton 14K.

Like all MH, you have to supplement them with T5 or VHO to produce the most pleasing color.

You really cant go wrong with these bulbs. They have a nice blue tint, and a higher PAR than most 10K's without the nasty yellow look.
I personnaly will be getting new Pheonix 14K's when its time to replace them. I like them that much. Unless I decide to go the all T5 route.

Best of all, the price....it cant be beat.:D

Agreed on the price - the phoenix bulbs are great.

In my experience, the phoenix bulbs are BLUER than the Hamiltons: below is a pic of my tank with a phoenix bulb on the LEFT and a Hamilton 14K on the RIGHT. No other lights on in this pic:

Not the best pic, but in person it was clear that the phoenix was both brighter and bluer than the Hamilton. Personal preference on which color you like better, but no question that the phoenix is brighter.

damn sunnyx u have a nice setup. thanks 4 replies. i'm ordering the phoenix. what ballast u guys using?

I am not sure about going the T5 route SunnyX. I have as many T5 bulbs over my tank as I can possibly get (4 X 39 watts) l and I am thinking about going to metal halide. I know certain people say that T5 is incredible but I am not convinced. They need to be replaced just as often as metal halides if you want to keep your SPS happy and at that rate they really aren't cheaper.

I haven't decided what I am going to do yet though.

I heard That!! That tank is kickin!!

I was thinking of placing 16 T5 HO @ 80watts. That would be an insane amount of light.
Im happy with the light at the moment, but as soon as the corals get bigger I will be forced to add more lighting because my tank is 3ft wide.
If anything, I may add two more halides.

I have 2 electronic ballasts and one HQI ballast. To my eyes they look the same. I know the HQI gives out more PAR but it also drains 70 more watts. Best bet is to stick Electronic Ballast.

i'll be using my PFO dual HQI ballast w/ the phoenix. i'm ordering mine next week. what's the life expectancy on them?

I plan to run mine for 12 months.

HQI will overdrive them so I would change at 10-12 month mark.

Sorry to hijack, but my Hamilton 14K SE bulbs are 11 months old, so replacement time is near. I run them without actinic supplement, and the color is great.

However, I wouldn't mind a bit more PAR. From what I'm reading, the Phoenix/AquaConnect may be just perfect for my needs. Any thoughts folks? And who does sell the Phoenix SE? I tried a few places but couldn't find them. thx!

Phoenix SE is reputed to show up soon ... but I've heard that for a while.

Right now, for SE bulbs, it's only Aquaconnects.
[do like mine]
