Phos guard and carbon

I run phos guard and carbon in my duel reactor how do you guys determine when it's exhausted and needs to be replaced also does anyone ever replace it at the same time they do a water change or does it mess with the tank stability

I'll switch if you guys can tell me what's the adverse effects of using it I have read so much on using the product and I don't even know what to believe anymore

I would say it depends highly on the amount of fish in the tank and how you feed. If you're o restocked and/or feed a lot the carbon will get depleted quickly. I've heard of intervals ranging between two weeks and a month. Since carbon is relatively inexpensive it won't hurt if you change it out a little early.

For phosphate, if you have a very accurate test kit (Hanna) test the effluent of the reactor, when it reads above zero you know it has been exhausted. Otherwise you can use algal growth as an indicator, less exact but may work for you.

I'm at 2 months on both also I have cheato growing like crazy ..I here a lot that if your glass needs to be cleaned a lot it's time to change it but I didn't know if I should go by that method

I heard the same thing, it's not very scientific but I suppose if you can make a correlation between when you change gfo (or whatever) and the amount of days your glass stays clean then it must habe some significance, as long as you're not changing a bunch of other things at the same time.

I use the Hanna phos meter, if > 0.00 two days in a row I change the GFO. I usually do a water change at the same time.

If you have a good skimmer don't bother with the carbon. You have to change too often!

IMO, the algae growth is a lagging factor so it's late in the game when your algae is growing more than normal.

I check PO4 once a week and if I see it going >0.03 I change out the Phosgaurd. I have a single reactor and for the GAC I'll put that in a media bag and then into the reactor so I can just pull that out when it depletes without having to change the Phosgaurd too. I don't know when the GAC is depleted, but I don't use much and change it 7-10 days anyway.

I'm asking when to replace it cause I do t want to replace it prematurely like I was doing carbon is expensive

sorry Im only busting them :love1:
I found this helpful for carbon https://youtu.be/gaDE1Swuke0
Most of the studies I've seen show even good quality carbon to only be effective for a few days at most.
as far as GFO I dont use it Hope the video helps
