any one have some live phtoplankton i can start my own culture with or do i need to start from scratch. I know what i would need to do to start from scratch and could probabley make enogh for every body monthly.

Thanks...I swear I ran out of links to try!

The only addendum I'd make to the directions is the note you can use DT's to culture phyto. Since they've switched to the new blend, the algae will all become on species eventually, as they'll outcompete the others for food. I don't know which one it will be, but it will likely depend on conditions, so a fresh starter culture is best.

Lisa, if you want to do this, let me know. I've been contemplating an order from FAF or Aquatic Eco-Systems and would be willing to split some stuff with you.

Fred,
Won't any blend of phytos eventually become one monoculture thru competition (if it does happen any time soon)? I have my doubts as to a monoculture happening quickly as the environment should be nutrient rich leading to less competition.

In theory it should. I don't know how fast it would happen, probably depends on a lot of factors. The problem with trying to culture a mixed blend is that without checking them under a microscope and knowing what you're looking at, you may not be culturing the most beneficial strain of phyto.

Fred,
based upon the one college level algal course (taxonomy and identification) I have taken, there aren't 10% of the RC posters that could ID one microalgae from the thousands of species out there. If Lishoop or anyone else is going to try and culture the stuff they might as well resign themselves to trusting DT or one of the stock mixes available online. In terms of being the most beneficial strain...... Ahhhh its a crapshoot.
I wouldn't waste the time culturing phyto for coral growth anyway unless they are going for the whole shebang with rotifers, zooplankton and any other live foods I missed. I wish her luck. It will be an interesting "science fair" project for her.

PS seen any good ricordea deals lately????

RCS i would love to split an order with ya and i probabley would try rotifers as well great for my scalllop and feather duster i think

Jon, I haven't seen squat lately...been kind of slow pretty much everywhere lately. I've always got an eye open though.

Lisa, you may want to think about how much time/effort you want to put into it. For what it will take effort and equipment-wise to culture phyto, rotifers, brine shrimp, etc., for a $25 bottle of some Reed Mariculture Roti-Feast...it should last you a good 6 months or more. I don't know if it's worth the effort unless you're planning on raising something like clowns...

well i do have mako's clowns and people are always coming to imports looking for baby fish food good market op for me

I may also be interested in getting in on an order... to start my own culture, But I'd also like to raise live brine a food if anyone has any pointers for getting then from baby to adult.

I was at a clearance outlet this past summer, and latched onto a can the size of a small coffee can of eggs, I just need to get into the "groove" of raising my own live food... Dan mentioned wanting to start some cultures before he left last year... wonder if he's still interested?

Did you see the episode of South Park where they raised Bshrimp?
