Thank you all for the kind words. To be honest, most of the time I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. I just read everything I can, and try to take the best methods I see. If you like this tank, it's because of all of the good ideas I've shamelessly adopted from the rest of you.
The big tank has a couple of unintentional critters already - a banded trochus snail that must have been transferred over with some of the rock, and a white brittle star that popped out of the cup of sand I brought over from my nano tank to seed the sandbed.
I also got my first livestock order yesterday. 11 chromis, a royal gramma, and a yellow watchman goby. Not even enough to make my quarantine tank look full.
I also picked up a couple of LPS that are hanging out in my nano tank until I'm ready for them, and a few snails and crabs that will likely stay in the nano permanently, since it's been overrun with hair algae.
I haven't done any water testing yet beyond sg and pH; I'm not expecting much of a cycle since I'm starting out with 1/3 of my rock from a pretty well established system, and the remaining 2/3 was dry and pretty completely devoid of any organics.
When I went to check on and feed the quarantine tank this morning, my fish room was up in the mid 80's and fairly humid. It's in the 60's outside today, and the partially open window wasn't cutting it for ventilation. I turned on the exhaust fan, and hopefully that'll get me through until spring. Next year I'll definitely need a window A/C unit for that room.
Cheers,
-Matt
