PHYTOBEAST(feast) any 1L culturing advice?

I am trying to culture phyto for rots and pods (not sure about the pods). My general setup is

1.019. one of the 12$ 5000k lights from HD (with some sunshine) phytofeast live. Thinking miracle grow for the manure. All done in 1L gatorade bottles (should be right around 1L full). I have an air stone, need to work something out to make it less turbulent but should be ok.

Thinking the water will need to be waste from my RODI. How often do you water change the cultures?

Any ideas?

Skip the Miracle Grow and get some proper Guillards f/2 media, a little bit goes a long way, and it has the proper nutrients and vitamins to provide a nutritionally excellent phyto...something the Miracle Grow is sorely lacking. Also skip the airstone and just use some rigid air line tubing with an open end. Airstones clog up very fast in such cultures. Turbulence is also OK, in fact for the phyto you want a nice rolling boil.

thanks for the help bill, read some of your posts before. Not sure how long the phyto feast will live in my fridge. exp date 11/11/12 but might need some light?? Nice to have a link to what everyone refers to as f2 :)

The phytofeast will be better off in the fridge in the dark until you actually have the light and necessary culture nutrients ready to go. Not sure how long it will remain viable, but would expect at least the nanochloropsis to remain viable till the expiration date.

that sucks. I can not buy from their site, tried in 3 browsers and they have an error in the html. short of downloading IE6 or whatever the fix is. Anyway, I doubt anyone really uses this, since you can't order it

Make sure you sterilize everything. Does not take much to kill the lowest form of life. If you use waste water from the RO I would microwave it for 10 minutes to make sure everything is sterile. Also make sure you mark your bottle because water will evaporate and you should top it off before you split it so you will always stay at 1.019 or where ever you start off at. If you don't the specific gravity will rise and the culture will eventially die off.

Thanks for the tips robert. Just saw the posts about microwaving the water. The water itself was run through the carbon blocks of my RO. I'm trying to set myself up in gatorade bottles but bigger must be better. The tubing it off to the side kind of not sure if that matters, hooked to a whisper filter. Either way i am picking up a splitter. The f/2 comes in the mail soon and im going to setup another 1L with that.

I like to use 1 gallon jugs that hawaiian punch comes in. An even better jug is the 5 liter wide mouth round cheese ball or misc pretzel snack mix stuff.

Florida Aqua Farms was undergoing some type of site maintenance a week or two ago, try the link again, it worked for me.
