Phytoplangton (make yourself?)

Sort of. If it is a blend of live phytoplankton, then you will eventually get a single strain in your culture as whatever the stronger strain is will out complete the others. For example, out of DT's Phytoplankton, a local reefer got a single strain of Phaeodactylum tricornutum from it. I just finished splitting all 4 bottles of each Nannochloris, Phaeodactylum, and Tetraselmis last night.

I read melvs reef http://www.melevsreef.com/phytoplankton.html
Does anyone know if miracle grow is toxic to fish or corals ? See the formula that works to grow phyto uses miracle grow.

miracle grow wont kill your fish, or anything but its designed for land plants. there could be some unknowns with it. i use a product called Micro Algae Grow for my cultures. everything you need can be found at Florida Aqua Farms. thats where most my stuff came from. :D

i have a little how to on my site as well. www.talkingreef.com has several podcast on culturing phyto i suggest you look at :)

Very nice website paintbug. It sounds like alitlibit too much for me now.
I will just keep buying phyto. Any suggestions on what brand? I am using DT,s now, my LFS also has Kent phyto. Thanks again.

DTs is about the if not the best you can buy right now. Kents phyto is not alive. or very little life anyway. it is a little work, and time consuming to grow your own, but for me its the only way i could afford to feed live phyto to the tank.

I agree 200%!! My local club members have done some extensive looks into DT's and other products as well as having guest speakers to talk about such. DT's is by far the better product. They even condense the stuff down. On the other hand, by the time it gets shipped from the manufacturer to the retailer and bought by the consumer, it has gone through rigorous torture and mishandling. Thus, it is difficult to tell how good the product is. On the other hand, though you'll have to dose a lot more to get the same amount that DT's has in its concentration, at least you know that nearly all of your home cultured phytoplankton is live.

I'll post this again here, just cause I'm proud of it :D
