Phytoplankton

Also i'm not sure anyone cares but an incredibly easy DIY rigid air tubing replacement is to cut the plunger section off of a pipette and shove the flex tubing down the pipette.

I have just been dumping unhatched eggs into the 10 g. I started by feeding it yeast dissolved in sugar water. Once my phyto culture got going i started feeding live phyto. I've heard spirulina powder also works well. I also throw in spare bits of food and i use my old tank water after WC to fill the brine tank.

one of the biggest factors I've noticed on brine density is specific gravity. I did some research on where my species comes from (it is the san fransico bay brand the latin name is like fransicana or something). It is grown in extremely high salt content water. It is actually grown in SF bay and the only other place is THE salt lake in UT. Obviously salt content is ridiculously high. I have noticed they seem to really prefer massive salt quantities.

Not sure its a solution but hopefully something i said is remotely useful lol. Lmk how it goes and Feel free to post pics!
I'm not sure what kind mine are... I got them from a place called "your pet shop" from amizon..

I'll snap some pics once I get home..

I started the tank with fresh rodi SW..
Rocks are cured.. (came from my tank about 6 months ago when my girlfriend gave me her daughters sea monkeys kit) I tried then to raise them.. but it didn't work out (I thought because the air stone was making too much water movement)

Anyways.. after they died.. the tank just sat for 6 months as is..with air going to it..

This time.. I tied a knot in the air line.. so only a bubble every second or so came from the stone... but they still died out very quick.. about a week or so..

I fed them the "growth food" that came with the original sea monkeys kit.. I think it's just dried ground up algae

I HAVE EXCITING NEWS!!!!

first photo is my tetraselmis culture.

Second photo is my "infusoria" experiment

Is this a new way to culture phytoplankton? Look at how dense the final result is (photo 3)! Under the scope they were more active in total. I wonder if this is possible with non-motile phyto or only similar motile phyto to tetraselmis

If this works again, i will abandon entirely the whole fertilizer/air tubing setup and make my phyto culturing life much easier.

4th photo is my new attempt at culuturing phyto. This is sterilized tank water with celery (cooked when i sterilized the water). I inoculated it with some of my phyto culture and will probably repeat the same in a week or so.

Oh ya, i forgot to mention, i assume this was the result of containmination from the bubbles in my phyto set up.

3 extra microphotos:

1. Here is a saltwater copepod that i have removed from my tank. I think it is carrying eggs. Im hoping to isolate the species and culture them in 2 l bottles. Should i feed nori? Phyto? Any info on feeding copepods would be great.

2. This is something my friend found in the ats with my copepods. I havent gotten around to IDing him yet. Help appreciated, as always

3. Freshwater copepod

I realized that second photo didnt help... heres a close up. It is like a crab and picks at stuff with pincher/claw like arms. Its the top oval

I imagine baby hermits are larger than this? Lmk if you know!

You are awesome! Thanks!

Maybe the short title? The thread has kind of evolved as what ive wanted to do has changd. Im glad people are enjoying it! Hopefully this celery bottle works out lol. Lmk if theres anything i should sample!

Been reading a bit about ostracods... i found this article about sampling, cataloging and culturing ostracods.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/285852763_Techniques_for_Collection_and_Study_of_Ostracoda

I've got a 2L bottle that i can breed them in. the article references a single celled algae but i am not sure if a motile species is adequate prey. Ill try it anyway but i also have a pretty good amount of gunk in my tank that i could remove with a pipette or turkey baster to feed the ostracods.

Next, i want to isolate the salt water copepods and breed them in a 2L. Ill have to do some more reading it seems :).
