Picasso Spawn 09.22.12

Our March collections yielded a very low number of Picassos and Platinums so it's time to put our broodstock back to work! This was their third clutch since they resumed spawning activities and I'll be documenting the full development of this batch.

The spawn event took place between 6:30PM and 9:30PM on Saturday, September 22, 2012. A new rotifer culture was started on Friday that should be ready to go for hatch night early next week.

Congrats on the your clowns spawning :fish2::fish2:

Looks like it a nice size clutch too.
I look forward to your updates.

Oh, your clowns are beautiful too....:inlove::inlove:

Ditto, on your clown, nice Picassos, I showed them to my wife and maybe she will let me get a pair.

:celeb1:Fantastic work Jason. Saw the update on Facebook this morning. I am glad I will have one of my mentors back in biz this fall! ~Jo

Thanks guys!

It's day 8 and the eggs are not ready to hatch. They've got eyes so I know they were fertilized properly but their color hasn't shifted to silver. I believe my water temperature is closer to 78 in this house whereas it was closer to 82 in my old apartment. That could delay hatch night for up to 4 days... Long story short, I won't be collecting tonight.

I prepared two new fry tanks this weekend. Got them painted, leak tested and they've been sterilized. Now it's just a matter of time.

Just a final update, I decided against collecting this spawn. The remaining eggs had really thinned out in number and it was a split hatch over two nights. The Picassos spawned again a few days later and I was much happier with the appearance of that clutch. I'll make a new thread to document that attempt.

Any benefits having them spawn on a touch coral? Or do they just prefer it? Makes for a rather interesting picture.

A few benefits but keep in mind it's their decision, not mine!

-The clutch gets plenty of watermovement, something that doesn't always happen in a clay pot.

-The clutch is naturally protected by the Frogspawn, that makes my clowns much happier throughout the entire incubation period.

-The parents also nip at the Frogspawn on hatch night forcing it to retreat. It acts as a natural alarm clock. I know with 100% accuracy when hatch night will be.

That's pretty awesome that they actually have a accurate way of telling you before they hatch!

Nice clowns. I'm trying to talk my wife into letting me get a pair. Lol that doesn't sound good. A pair of picassos!

Love the pic. How long will you raise the fry before you sell? I don't think I've ever tried to guess how young fish are when I buy them
