Picking up some LR today

If I get any Mantis Shrimp does anyone want them?

As they will go to my neighbor's OSCAR otherwise...

Also whats the easiest way to catch them?

There are several methods that have been posted on this....
1. Fresh water dip
2. High salinity dip
3. Carbonated water on the rock with the mantis (if you know which rock)
4. Leave the rocks out of water overnight

Unfortunately, these methods will kill a lot of life form on the rocks.....and they are not guaranteed to work...I tried the fresh water dip for a minute on each piece of rock, but no mantis came out....caused my tank to have a huge cycle, but it was a new tank setup so I wasn't too upset with that.....Now with the tank going for about 3 months, I hear lots of clicking and have seen a mantis shrimp shoot around the tank once.....can't figure out which rock they (I know I have more than one) are living in to try and remove the pest. :eek1: :eek1: :eek1:

I have one - and managed to capture him when I put the rock in the tank....

I have him in a cup of water right now - and will put him in a bowl with a powerhead later -

Ill take as many as u can get out of your rocks. Just let me know.
I am making a tank just for these guys. They will find home in my sump for the time being.
Thanks, Equalizer

Clicking in the tank often isn't mantis shrimp, but ends up being pistol or popping shrimp. These look more like a small lobster, only with just one large claw (the popper) and a smaller one for feeding.
The "popping" noise is primarily used for defense, but I have seen them trap small shrimp and fish in their burrows and then stun them enough to overpower them.
Most remain fairly small and are relatively harmless over the long run....an added plus, however is that many of the shrimp gobies will move in and form symbiotic pairs that are fascinating to watch.
Pistol shrimp are common here in Florida, and I was concerned about their pairing with gobies from other seas, but found that it seems to work in the majority of cases (although it may be sometimes more of the fishes idea than the shrimps)
