pics of my tank--dial up beware!!

Mucho-thanks much! Your tank got me going on zoos years ago. If it was not for your's and Archie's tank I would be diong this type of softie tank. They are spectacular tanks and some of the best I have seen.

As far as K on bulbs-I have experimented with 10-12-14-20K from most 400w bulb companies out there, and alot of $$.
It is very difficult to do supplemental lighting on my tank-if I did you would have to duck under a 36x36 light.
My tank bottom is at about 25in from ground and about 36 inches at top, so you walk right up on the tank and look down. The lighting is about 18-20 inches above that and is a lumenarc mini 400w 20k reefoptic bulb. Like I stated before I have tried most bulbs under the sun and I prefer this one next to the Coralvue 12k or XM 20k. The XM 20 k gave off a yelow cast?? Could be the M59 ballast. Most 10k were not very eye appealing, without supplement actinic, on a top down view tank.

As far as the ricordia-THEY LOVE IT! including my Yumas. You cant see all of mine from the pics, but in pic #5 and 8 you can see a gold/blue yuma and it is thriving-about 6in under the surface. All of the FL rics love the high light. The only Yuma that I have had a problem with is my red?? It has turned a bold pink but is still very plump, even after 6 plus months of this lighting.
Did you see the plain old shrooms in the back about 1 inch under the water? They have really gotten bright under 400w
I started out my new tank with a Hamilton 14k 400w because I knew the par was not too different from what I had before. I then switched to XM 20k then current-going pretty slow
I have had no ricordia problems until my temp dropped to 63, then some got the brown jelly and I lost about 50 polyps. Bad heater was the culprit. That was about a month ago
I run a Coralife UV, a modded Octo 2000 skimmer-about half of the week.
As far as feedings I feed very heavy about 2-3 times the suggested dosage of Reef plus, Chromaplex, Cyclopleeze, and Dt's products.
""I also have more polyps than most aquariums, please follow all directions"""

I also like to keep my iodine at 0.07-0.10 mg/l, Alk 11-12 dkh, Mg 1500ppm, PH 8.3, Ca the last time I checked 420ppm.

This is all done through the RHP 2 step method and dosing.

I went black for the very reasons you stated as well as the fish temperment.
As I stated in the opening-the whole idea came to me when "letmegrow" and I were having a discussion, at the store he manages, about how tranquil the fish are in a top down enviroment. After about 20 minutes in the store I decided this was going to be the new tank that I was looking for-and I have never looked back!

Some people call it a "tub" but they have never seen a top down view only tank. It seems much more natural.

Thanks for the praises-I strive to have a tank like yours and thanks for getting me into softies!
good luck and happy reefing!

geoxman, it's 12:42 AM, I'm up at 4:30 every morning. Couldn't sleep, so here I am again admiring your tank, AGAIN.

1. Tank temp?

2. Refugium?

3. Circulation? Think I see Seio's.

4. Substrate and dept?

5. Ever experienced any zoa related issues that you can share with us.

Thanks again Boss.

Mucho

PS, does anyone else have a Top/Down display tank?

HOLY COW! (Or is it, holy clam?)

I love your tank! I think you should keep your friend's clam :)

Those are some amazing zoas and nice rics too! I want some, I want some! :)

You did a fabulous job on it.

Mucho,
the tank temp is always between 76-79 with a new ebo heater guarded by a JBJ arctica 1/4 hp chiller.

I do have a refugium, sometimes it as much fun to watch as the top.
The sump is an all acrylic 24x24x24 cube and the fuge part is about 14x24 and filled with cheato lit by a Melev HD light. The rest is sectioned off for the skimmer and misc power heads and return pump. My total water volume is about 80 gallons.

As far as the circulation I use a rio HF for the split return and two Seio 620. I could maybe use a little more flow, a few dead spots, but the rics really didn't like it when I was using the Seio 1100's and there was too much surface agitation-making viewing difficult. As it is right now there is very little agitation.
I have found that about twice a week I have to shoot one return at the surface to break up the dust/protein film that will settle on the surface. There is about 9 square feet of water that is not covered by a canopy and since it is the only viewable from top down any film is undesirable-just like algae on the front of a typical aquarium.

The substrate in this one is crushed aragonite, some lowes sand, and some chicken feed. About 3/4 to 1 inch
This was not some high tech substrate formula, just a combo of substrates from my previous tanks.
Oh, and in case there is a mad scramble for chicken feed, it is ground up oyster shells and can be found at most Farm Supply stores. LOL

I have experienced all types of zoo related loss, ie.. nudis, pox, fungus, etc.. I will mention for about the past year of doing the RHP 2 part and keeping an elevated level of iodine-everything is much happier. I add about 90ml of each (2 part) every day and my levels do not fluctuate at all. I think that it is consistency of the PH, Alk, and Ca that has made the growth take off. I use to add supplements when it was getting low, like most people, but the every day dose keeps everything much happier.
I also travel for my job and when I am out of town my 6 year old will add the pre-poured bottles for me. I have turned my 6 year old daughter into a "fish geek" like me! At least that is what she calls me.

Thanks and happy reefing!

msman-the clam will stay until my buddy gets his tank back up and running. He use to have one of the best SPS tanks I have ever seen. He went through a real bad case of AEFW and just shut everything down for a bit.

goulash and cgar thanks

Do you have any close up pics,

I just love the Zoas and Rics, and shrooms, and that clam, dammmmm, that's a lot of clam dip, lol. I would have to get used to that top view only tank, but anytime you want to ship it to NJ, please let me know. I see I have a lot of work to do on my tank.

revclyburn

delsol-thanks
revclyburn-Macros are very diffucult because of the glare coming from the Lumenarc, it is not as prevelant when standing over it, but the glare is really bad when trying to get quality pics??? I should be able to get a camera this weekend and attempt a few more macros. Thanks and happy reefing

Im just curious I had eard that you may be at the frag swap in gallatin. If so what are you bringing.

Outstanding tank. Thanks for sharing. Try using a polarizer, if you can get one, to cut the glare in the tank. I'd love a crack at photographing that tank. Truly outstanding.

How about a pic of the sump and fuge??? Oh, and what made you use the Chicken feed in the first place??? I haven't heard anyone else doing this... My fiance calls me a reef geek... ;)
