I let sickman(David) borrow my Coralife fixture for a couple months while I was building my new tank. last night I went and picked up the fixture and for helping him out he gave me this softball sized colony.

Not sure what it is anyone have any ideas?

He said it was a deep blue with purple tips in his buddies tank before he acquired it. I plan on taking weekly pics of it to see how it colors up over time. It's in my friend Bretts tank right now.

very very nice-don't u just wish it will stay that color LOL.
great pickup-tell your friend i'll lend him something for a beauty like that.
hard to tell 'deepwater"?

It looks like an SPS, hard to tell which species, for sure it has been deprived of proper lighting for some time, it has started to bleach from the bottom, he will need some extreme TLC to turn him around, but it is doable.
If you plan to place this coral in your new tank the chances of it surviving are low to none.

ditto , just leave him on the sand or place him on a stable tank for a while.

Yes he is in a stable established tank and will remain there for quite awhile. The piece of Chips acro I got form Chris is in the same tank and has more than doubled in size in about 2 months. his water is pristine and very stable.

Maybe a jacquliniana (sorry spelling) or one of those related corals. The growth formation doesn't look typical, probably due to it being under not the best conditions for awhile. I'd say anacropora if it wasn't going to turn blue. hehe Good luck w/ it!

here is a new pic after almost 2 weeks in the tank. you can see some polyps sticking out now, some of the tips are a light purple and some look like new growth.

hard to keep your hands from it, but I would just leave it be for another month or so then slowly and gradually move it up in the water column towards the light.

heh

we haven't touched it, don't plan on it for awhile. I doub't I'll even think about moving it into my new tank for a long time.

Bretts tank is established and stable. Once he gets a new Skimmer his water quality should be even better.
