Get a controller, guys (like the RC or ACjr). It's well worth it.

Sorry for not getting this. I thought most of the titanium heaters comes with controllers, what's the difference between the stock controllers and the others like ACjr ones? In the event of a faulty heater, how will ACjr prevent disasters from happening?

Quality! A temperature knob is NOT a controller, it's a thermostat. There is a higher-end Won Bros that has a digital "controller" and also the Finnex titanium series has ones with and without digital controllers.

The advantage to an external controller is that if the heater goes bad and won't shut off, the controller shuts off power to the heater. Of course, if the heater is not heating, the controller can't make it work.

By staggering the external controller with the internal one (for heaters AND chillers), you have redundancy for safety, much like when you do an auto top-off, you want to have two switches, not one, so if one switch fails and does not shut off, the other one does.

This is wierd as I am having heater problems as well. Mine WON'T turn off. I have lowered the termostat and nothing. I have gotten a new one I am going to switch tonight.

Whoa, I am not nutz. Well maybe I am but now I know I am not just imagining the heater problems I am having. I bought two, a 300 watt and a 150 watt to set them at slightly different temps but they always seem to overheat. I can have them set at 78 and the tank will be 82 and the D*** things are still on! I finally unplugged them last night and I am going to return them. They are both less than three months old and I have been having the problem from day one.

I wanted to wait and buy a controller after saving for a while but it looks like that moves up on my priority list.

D*** this makes me mad. And I agree for another ten or fifteen bucks I could have gotten a nice ti unit with external controller and display.
