Pictures of Bomber's barebottom SPS tank and related equipment

With thriving corals no one will be looking for sand .

So far no one's noticed that my sand is gone, the most common comment I get is "what's wrong with that poor red fish!?!"

LOL I did! Tell them that poor red fish never learned how to swim and has to hop around every where he goes. ;)

Couple of questions for ya :D

Bomber, can you state some of your water quality parameters before and after results?

Whats the biggest diffence you notice now that you have a bb tank?

Well, I didn't feel like breaking down my whole system just to get the sand out. I did it over the course of a few months with no problem, but whatever you feel more comfortable with...

Bomber, do you get good polyp expansion with your SPS? I only see limited polyp expansion, and that's only when all the lights are out. Kinda discouraging, just wondering what factors could be influencing this. I know the plankton tends to bloom at night, but i'm still not seeing nearly the expansion I do in some other people's tanks.

I didn't see more polyp extension till I upped the flow with a couple more powerheads which will I will probably remove once I move to a closed loop for my om-squirt.

Currently running a mag 9.5 on the om, but added two mj 900's.

The other thing that I did was to build a diy auto top-off so the salinity would not be going all over the place as I would manually top-off.

"Is he ok?"
:)

maybe i should cancel that order on the Deltec calcium reactor and order some baking soda instead....

I get normal polyp extension. I don't get that over inflated "I'm gagging and need to purge my system" polyp extension. ;)

I had phosphate leaking from my sand bed before and now I don't.

That'll do it. Some like a lot of flow - but some don't. Flow will also trigger polyp inflation in some corals too.

I had to move my tank to another side of the room, for a little remodel. This was a good time for me to go BB,but with construction delays, the tank was down over 3 weeks. I had my frags, and other corals in tubs, and did several water changes, but I still lost some SPSs. The live rock was in plastic drumbs, with P/Hs . I didn't really cook it,but it was in the dark. I cleaned the tank, and set it up with a star board botton. I started with all new water ,and the same L/R ,fish, and corals. I had no ammonia spike,or cycle. The tank has never looked better. Even some of the corals I thought I lost are coming back. The tank looks much cleaner. I'm glad I went BB. Ted

Anyone know if smoking will affect the system? We recenly had some people over who did some of that (cough cough), and two frags suddenly bleached. Don't know if it was related.

Smoking will affect your tank - but it is more of a chronic, long term process than just a few hours.

Most compounds in smoke are readily water soluble (the reason why they are so easily absorbed in lungs).

I know what you mean Bomber, Every time I try to do something like posting pics I screw something up. I'm trying to get my son to come over, and show me how to make this thing work. I'll have to burn up a roll of film,so I have something to post, but then my photography skills (well thats another matter). Ted
