Pix & ID: Critters that come in your rocks: the good and the bad.

Not harmless... So are they not good to have? Idk what exactly the rest looks like as it's never come out of that hole.

I pulled that rock, torched the algae and scrubbed it off best I could. I ready from people who like it that it likes low flow and high light so I put it in a high flow low light section, the affected side is facing me so that I can watch it better. If it comes back I'll go to more serious measures like H202 on affected sites.

Is it normal for algae to grow on Turbos and hermits? Or is that more of this algae stuff.

They are good to have. I haven't seen any in my tank but I'd be glad to have some. I have tons of bristle worms. When I say tons I mean TONS. They irritate my corals some but so far they haven't hurt anything. They are harmless too if they are well fed (so I've read).

As far as the other, I think you did a good job. Just watch it for any returned growth.

Yes, a lot of my snails and crabs have algae growing on them. Some of mine have beautiful purple coraline algae on them. Some have green coraline algae on them. I guess it also depends on what algae but it's probably OK. Do you have a picture?

Yep, here's basically what they look like. One of the turbos also has some purple coralline though.

Will wait on it to get bigger and then if I don't feel better about it will remove it and donate it to the LFS if they want it. :o

Just got this mushroom polyp frag
Put it in the tank & I noticed a long tentacle coming out of the white thing in the center...
Is it a worm, or ?
And there is also a fussy looking thing on the top that may be a sponge?

How about this weird purple "bug"? It is pretty small (see cerith snail for scale) and is moving about. I watched it slowly to a 90 degree turn and was gone this morning from the rock.

Looks like sponge and spaghetti worm. Could be bristle star but legs look a little thin. Hard to tell from picture.

He has become more red and has definitley increased in size.

I have a quandary. We just got a 29 gal with some beautiful coralline-encrusted live rock of of Craigslist three days ago, and today, this guy popped up to greet us when we came home from work.

It's base is about the size of a quarter, tentacles approx 1in long. It's a reddish brown and has little white dots at the tips. Seems to have a relatively long foot or stalk to it, we couldn't actually completely see where/how it was attached. The color is very uniform except the white tips.

It looks like an anemone, but we tried to feed it just to see what would happen and it retreated so quickly it was insane. It moved FAST, completely retreating into the rock.

What are we looking at? Majano? Aipstacia? None of the above?
Do we need to hunt this down and get it out of the tank, or should we leave it?

Spaghetti and hair worms are really good to have in the tank: they clean all sorts of things that other critters can't get to, burrow into the sand. Good for overall diversity. And they very very rarely come out where you can see their scary bodies. A few clear tentacles here and there, usually after the lights go out.

Since I seem to have failed with pics the first time, let's try again:

What is this, and do we need to get it out or is it okay?

Looks like aptasia to me. I'd kill it asap if that's what it is. Others will probably respond. I inject mine with a syringe with lemon juice. You have to try and get into the stem. If the stem isn't accessible you may want to purchase some aptasia x or Joes juice. You "feed it" those options and it dies. It's actually pretty neat to watch them implode. Mine sometimes puff out what they just ate and then die!

I have seen these coming out of my rocks. The holes they are coming out of are about the size of a pea so the picture is magnified quite a bit for visibility. I thought it might be aiptasia but they are completely white/clear and I've seen some images of hidden cup coral that look a bit closer to this than the pictures of aiptasia do. Any ideas on what it could be?

Ok, I have about 5 ... million of these tiny little white things spawning in my tank. They look like tiny little brittle stars?

And then there is this star... Seems to just eat algae so far
