Pix & ID: Critters that come in your rocks: the good and the bad.

Hi,
Wondering what kind of crab this is. There are two and they came in on the black sun coral I just got. I couldnt get them off the coral because of the creep factor so they are in my tank. They have never left the coral. I know the coral looks pathetic but with feeding in pretty sure. It'll make a comeback.

Looks like an acro crab (Trapezia Pocillopora)

Lambrose 1994
That is some kind of green algae. Your turbos may not go for it if it is going sexual or the substrate is to sharp

Hi, i read the startingpost stating all crabs are bad and should be removed. But on a scale of 1-10 how bad is the crab on the picture? 1 being pretty harmless, 10 being a sure way to destroy my tank.

Seems to be an Actaeodes tomentosus - primarily an algae eater but if it can get easy meaty food it won't ignore it. One would need better pictures to be sure, but provided it is one, I'd give it a 3-4, so fairly safe to leave in the tank.

Hi alexander,

Thanks for your quick response. I looked up some pictures and I'm 99% sure this is the same crab. I will see if I can get a better picture from the one in my tank but he really likes dark places :)

Brittle star? Try putting a small piece of raw shrimp in front with tongs and see if it comes out
