Pix & ID: Critters that come in your rocks: the good and the bad.

one of my leathers has some bubbles on today, not sure where they came from but he doesn't seem to like it. what are these?

difference between happy leather and sad leather with bubbles on it..

If you can do it, try to chip off the rock right under them. If not, you can try superglue or reef putty. I had pulled that clump out once when there were more, I used tweezers & it took part of the rock off, but you can see I missed something so they're back. I tried kalk & it just made them grow more, I guess in self preservation LOL.

I must have jinxed myself. The brown hydroids seemed to have subsided some, but three new clumps of the little white ones have popped up overnight. These things spread like wildfire.

SexyRob, the "sad" leather looks like it's about to shed. They will do that periodically to clean themselves off & to grow. The bubbles may be cyano. Having some flow on the leathers will help them stay healthy. I have a cabbage leather that almost always has a section of it shedding. It hardly ever is all completely open at the same time!

Ryphen, I was kidding about male & female, couldn't resist since it had a skirt! LOL

You made me think about it for a second, and I realized the joke. Thought it was too clever to not play along. :lmao:

And Bloodypeasant, I think I might have the same light colored hydroids as you. There's a large colony living on the underside of a rock. Didn't even know they were there until a few weeks ago. If they weren't in such a bad spot, I could get a picture.

ah ok, that makes sense, thanks!

got another rock, it had something on it.. what is this?

when I first put it in..

whats this red thing?

It is a baby kenya tree coral frag. They grow pretty quick and they can take over a tank. I 'personally' do not yet have a problem with mine and I have what looks like yours. They are not as bad as xenia as far as overgrowing a tank and it also depends on how clean the tank is (they like dirtier water). So, to me, not a bad find. But it varies really. You also have another one the right side of the rock. They will 'drop babies' like that as they grow and that is where the problem of overgrowing tanks comes from. I like em, but my mind might change someday lol.

You had me going!

this thing is already growing like crazy, since I posted this, it seems to have grown another 1/2 inch!!

also the one in the back has really come out of its shell!

Yup, and now I see a third one in the pic you just posted (on the bottom, middle towards the right). Mine do not grow this fast but everyone is different. This rock obviously had a big one in its previous tank that just shed a bunch of babies.

Bristle Worm??

I got some corals over the weekend.
While dipping each one and letting it soak QUITE a bit of stuff came off. I know ALL of them except one.

This picture is horrible but it will have to do.

It was a small worm the width of a human hair, or two, and about 1/4 inch long.

I saw it coming out when I dipped this trumpet. You can kinda see it below where the split is.

Large Yellow Sponge... About the size of a golf ball. It is growing all around this rock and about a dozen other spots in the aquarium, this one is the biggest. How invasive is it? Any benefits? Does it have a name?

Worm, I have no idea what your worm is LOL.
Ziggy, is it hard or soft? If it's hard it could be some type of calcerous sponge. No idea the specific name or how invasive it might be, sorry.

OK, not calcerous, then. I have tons of sponges in my tank. Hard little yellow ones and soft pink ones, some gray that started out black and makes these little towers in the caves LOL, and some nasty, soft gray stuff that comes right back when I pull it out. The pink started out kind of invasive then backed off. The hard yellow ones don't seem to do any harm, the black either. That soft gray stuff isn't overtaking anything, but it sure grows fast & won't go away!

That's a pretty good sized mass you have going, I'd definitely keep an eye on it & if it starts encroaching on corals maybe try a 10:1 tank water/3% peroxide dip & see if that helps.
