He mentiones something about getting stuff from Aquatouch... Is this a local tank? It's like a large refugium. I think it's awesome.

oh ya its local...he lives in Tuscon...that forum is one me and a few others started out...its for local planted tanks but we have many members doing salt tanks also...AAPE stands for Arizona Aquatic Plant Enthusiasts...

LOL it is awsome and he is injecting c02 like a planted tank

quote from the sw planted tank

Secrets... I'll just list everything I do.

I use Reef Crystals, I used uncured rock, I let it cycle fully (with uncured rock and full lights). I have dedicated Sunday as my trimming day (very important to stop or start things growing where you want them to) and cleaning the tank (scraping the glass, removing unwanted algae, cleaning pumps, etc...). The only thing I dose is B-ionic 2 part calcium buffering solution and Brightwell Aquatics Ferrion iron supplement. I keep the lights on 24/7.

I believe a lot of the nutrients and food for the coral and algae also comes from my fish food mixture as listed:

1 frozen cube of mysis
1 frozen cube of brine shrimp (high in HUFAS)
1 frozen cube of brine shrimp (spirluna enriched)
1 full pump of LiquidLife MarinePlankton made with Cyclop-eeze
a couple drops of LiquidLife BioPlankton
a couple drops of Kent Zoecon
a mild squirt of Kent Zoe.

All of that goes into a little sealable jar that I keep in the fridge though I usually up the quantity by 5 (5 cubes ea, 5 mild spuirts, etc...) I feed 2 times a day, sometimes 3 - 6 depending on how much they eat. I also over feed once a week on purpose to feed the cleanup crew, macros, and xenia - sometimes I'll drop whole silversides in for the snails (nasarius, tonga... not astreas) so they can clean it up (and they do). The rock anenome eats frozen krill. And all the shrimp get frozen krill once a week as treats.

I don't think I have much more secrets than that. Oh, my CO2 is 1 bps - too scared to go higher - it's just enough to get the algae to pearl. Water changes every 3 months - about 15 to 20 gallons is replaced.

A very long time ago (go back to a time when 5500k mh was still on Hamilton's to-do list) I let a 240g reef overgrow with 3 or 4 species of Caulerpa. And then one morning I came into the living room and.....shouted very bad things.

I'm glad to see he's in Tuscon, in Cali he'd be in trouble with the DFG. Cool pipefish habitat.

I know this is a really old thread and the link is dead but can anyone tell me what time of algae was in this tank? This is pretty sweet looking

We have a 55g tank in our classroom that I would like to primarily be macro and sponges. We only have caulerpa and chaeto for green, and dragons tongue, dragon's breath and a pink dragon's breath/cotton candy macro so far.

Not sure all the types, but if you do a search in google you can find some really nice macro algaes. I just picked up some blue scroll algae and Nemastoma.

This is what the Nemastoma and blue scroll will look like as it grows out.
