plate coral

Okay I got a plate coral about 2 weeks ago and am loving it. I just have a couple of questions about it. It keeps moving on me. i have it flat on the sand bed in one spot and when i wake up it will have moved about 2 inches. Now I know that does not seem like a lot but in a 12 gallon nano its noticable. Second i cant get any pic on here so is there anybody that would be able to hep me identify if i sent the pics to you. Thanks, Justin

They are mobile. Not sure if there's anything you can do there.

They will also sting your corals... they're a bit aggressive. So it may just not be a good coral for a 12g nano. :)

A fungia plate? I had no idea they were mobile. Never had one but always thought they were cool. I hate corals/inverts that move... inevitably kill your favorite other coral.

Yes they will move!!!! They do not like a lot of flow and needs plenty of light. You either had it in a shady spot or in high flow area where it was trying to get away from. They also like you to feed them, but it's not required, I used to feed mine mysis shrimp. I had one that grew huge for me and it was a shame when bryopsis killed it awhile back. I'm so happy those suckers are taken care of.....

Also like it was mentioned above, it WILL sting other corals. It will kill any corals it comes in contact with so watch where it goes. IF you have a long tentacle plate coral, their tentacles WILL extend very long when it's in happy mode, basically the whole body will expand so if it goes to where it likes to be, make sure nothing is near by. This is not one those corals for small tanks if you like to have a variety of corals since it needs plenty of space all the way around and I mean 6" of space all around depending on the size. I would love to get another one cause I really miss mine.....

Mine moves too, but only a little bit, it seems to like the spot it's in. It's amazing how big it puffs up when it's hungry (It's got shorter tentacles, I think this helps it get bigger). It's crazy, this thing will eat half of a silverside in a matter of hours.

The shorter tentacles isn't that bad. But you got to see how BIG my long tentacle looked before. It got to be HUGE, beautiful piece I had...

How did you get rid of your bryopsis, I am being overtaken!!

I love mine to very cool to watch. I think that he has found a spot that he likes and hopefully he will stay. I have moved all my other corals away from it so i hope that it wont kill them and will have plenty of room. Either that or i need to get a bigger tank. :-)

I tried just about everything....The thing that did it for me is by daily plucking and the fish, mainly tangs!!! My Regal, Naso, Yellow, and Sailfin Tang all eats it. I had a Kole Tang that eats it too before it perished.....

I also took out the worst rocks and dried them out completely for weeks before putting them back in. Once you have them, you can never get rid of them completely unless you dry the rocks out completely. Most of the rocks I can not remove because it's over taken by my caps so my fish are the ones that's doing the trick. After battling with it for over 3 years, I was VERY happy to see them gone. The funny thing is my Naso tang NEVER touch the stuffs before until he sees other tangs eating it so he started eating it and it was gone in one week when I couldn't get rid of it for over 3 years. My Naso gobble that stuffs up so quick, left the Kole nothing and the Kole stopped taking food from me for some odd reason and starved to death. I had to starve the fish with no food for that week when they took out the weeds, then back to feeding..... So I try to look on the bright side, which is worth it, losing 2 mini-tangs or battling bryopsis? Tomini was the other one I lost, they both stopped taking food after that crisis.

I have a yellow tnag and a powder brown and I tried starving them and they want touch the stuff. They eat everything around it but will not touch the bryopsis.

Emerald crap has been working on my tank like a mad man. I know i only have a 12 gallon one but i could not even see the sand it just looked like grass my back wall was covered too. This guys has been in here and almost has it completly out.

I think what did the trick for me is when one eats it, everyone else eats it. In one tank I have a Regal that eats it like mad so all the other fish followed. In the other tank, I bought two tangs that would eat it so the other one followed. Then on top of staving them, the bryopsis receded and it was being torn apart like no tomorrow. Took one week with a tank FULL of bryosis. I also got a Sea Hare and tons of hermit crabs and turbo snails. Everyone did their part..... IF I were to do over again, I would not have added the hermits!!!! They are snail killers..... When I say turbo snails I mean the big ones like the zebra stripped ones. Zebra Turbos! Start yanking like no tomorrow and stop feeding your fish for a few days for observation, but do feed if they are overly starved, tangs seem to do that very quickly....

Sea hares definitely mow down the stuff... but they also starve to death rather quickly once it is gone. So, I have trouble supporting the use of them because I generally feel that they are practically sentenced to death once they end up in a fish store...

Sea Hare really didn't make that much of a difference in my tank. But yes your right, when the stuffs run out, they starve to death. Mine would eat algae sheets IF I can locate the Sea Hare to give it to, otherwise it eats nothing and eventually it did starve to death. I feel bad, I felt I should have gotten it out and put it inside the fuge where the algae is growing like mad now after the display is cleared out. But it have a tendency getting sucked into powerheads and there's two in my fuge so I wasn't sure how that would work out....It was a shame though....
