I have heard of skunk cleaner, but not skunk clown.

Would a yellow tang outgrow my tank?

If someone could answer that type of question they would go down in reef keeping history:lol:

There have been some studies done by marine biologists that have stated that fish studied in captivity seem to grow to about 66 per cent of there size in the wild. That would put an adult size yellow tank at six inches instead of nine(roughly)

The issue becomes more of agression as a fish gets larger rather then if the size fits the tank. Fish 'can" at some point feel that there space is threatened by other fish and become quite agressive.
There is also the theory of internal organ problems with tangs that simply need alot more swimming room then is provided--this can lead to a shorter life span in captivity. Again not substantiated by fact.

That said --I've seen many yellow tangs in 90 gals that appear to be quite fine

I'm just starting out and have been reading a ton. I made it about 'halfway' through this thread and didn't see much about invert/coral only style tanks so a quick run over of my wishlist would be neato keen.

I'm in a 12G cube. 4" DSB. Huge baserock puttied with smaller to make towers and ledges, but all glued so it wont be moving, at all, ever, no matter how much something might dig.

I graviate towards odder, wierder creatures. Most fish are boring to me. :( Plan on doing a almost all invert/critter tank.

Yellow watchman and pistol pair as the only fish. (are there smaller pistols I should look for specifically? I know to avoid certain gobies.)

a few sexy shrimp
a few blue legged hermits
3 narcisious snails
2/3 algae eating snails
cleaner shrimp
1or 2 pom pom crabs
1 or 2 porcelain crabs
1or 2 cocoworms or featherdusters

Tank will contain whatever corals I can get to work with the 50/50's I already have until cash flow affords me nicer stuff. I know the pom poms will steal certain corals to carry around, thats fine.

There is a lot in the thread about inverts not really counting towards your bioload, and was told I can 'fit' more of htem in a tank then you would normally fish. Keep in mind inverts and oddities is what I'm looking for so if the list is good and there are other suggestions please post em.

Thanks!

my only concern with that many inverts in a 12 gal cube without fish is that there will not be enough to eat for them. Alot of what they eat is passed over fish food and waste.
but that will be a neat looking tank--hope you post some pictures on here of it

I've gotten suggestions in other threads, but i'll guess I'll ask here since I'm still a noob and that's what this thread is for.

29g biocube with 32lbs of live rock, ~2" sandbed, stock lighting, media basket with filter floss, purigen, chemi-pro...fuge basket in chamber 2 with underwater light and chaeto, MJ1200 return pump and koralia nano in DT.

Fish stocking plans

1. Blue-green chromis (already in the tank, already named cooper, not going anywhere)
2. paired clownfish
3. McCoskers Flasher Wrasse
4. Royal Gramma

Let me know what you think.

that sounds good
You can also consider bangii and pajama cardinals, watchman goby and flame gobies. A flame angel would look great in there too.

Interested in the fuge basket--can you post a picture of it?

I have a stocking question to add to the pile.
I'm downsizing from a 55g to a 29g. I've seen several clown pairs held happily in this size tank here on RC but I was wondering how a trio would do. I currently have a trio of occelaris clowns (a female orange along with a male and adolescent black misbars) that have to my knowledge always gotten along. When I bought them they were in a 20g and the previous owner said they were never aggressive towards each other. They occasionally dart towards the chromis (presumably saying "respect my authoritah!") and the adolescent's hiding spot is very close to the pair's. What to you guys think?

If they have always been together with no problems then they should be fine. Problems can happen when you have a mated pair and try and add a third clown to the tank

90g tank has
1-YWG w/tiger pistol
2 Pajama Cardinals
2 Blue Chromis
2 Fire Goby
Now two clowns
CUC

would like to add a dwarf angel and a couple other various fish - looking to keep smaller peaceful fish so I can have more variety in various color assortments
suggestions

a flame angel would be perfect in there. I would also consider a dotty back(purple and yellow in colour)

Mindfreeze
I don't have any experience with other pistols but have a Tiger/Orangespot pair and the fish is fine ,but the shrimp digs at least 6 new holes a day and piles the sand from them 3-4 inches high. He is extremely fond of burying anything you put on the sandbed or digging under a coral till it falls in his hole then covers it like a front porch. If I could catch him he would be gone in an instant.

I have a 9 month old 55 gallon reef tank with a 15 gal sump. DSB, assorted corals and inverts and these fish so far:

8 x Chromis
1 tailspot blenny
1 Randall's goby
1 Stonogobiops nematodes
1 S. yasha

I would like to add:
1 tiger watchman goby (V. wardii): will this fish decimate my useful micro critters in DSB?
2 pink streaked wrasse (Pseudocheilinops ataenia): Wetweb says these are too touchy. Anyone kept them?

What do you think of these additions?

Thanks!

A tiger watchman will likely decimate your sandbed and then die of starvation in a 55g. You're also filling up your sandbed niche by having three gobies already in a 55g; as they get bigger, it's gonna get crowded. 8 chromis is going to be a battle royale when they mature.

9 month 29G cadlight (2009) system with many corals, 2 clams (that will be traded for 2 smaller ones when they get bigger) 120 lbs live rock. I want a lawnmower blenny because they have personality. Yer or no?

120 lbs of live rock in a 29g? Holy moly. Blennies of all kinds are possible clam mantle nippers... up to you whether or not you want to gamble. And if you add fish after, he could bully them as well.

Curious on what some of you guys recommend for a minimum tank size for an achilles tang or powder brown tang? Currently have a 110 gallon tank but will be upgrading in the near future to a 240g in wall setup. Could an achilles or powder brown be kept in a 110 or should I just hold off till the 240 is built?

Achilles' are pretty difficult fish. A 240g would be appropriate for an adult.

I (already) have a dendro I have to target feed nightly, which is still a bit messy while I get it down. I'd be purposly feeding inverts since this is the purpose of the tank.

I'm having a lot of problems finding detailed information on the goby/pistol pair choices. Some threads people are saying to get the yellow watchman / tiger pair because they dont require nearly as much real estate (I have a small sandbed, most is rock, DSB is about 4" though) and half of what im reading says the pistol will kill and eat othe shrimp, like the sexy shrimp or a cleaner shrimp that I want.

I'm all for a nice small goby and pistol since the tank is small.

I understand they are a difficult fish, but its just one of those things where when you see it you gotta have it. I'm very willing to put in the time to see the fish is healthy and happy:) I will have to hold off until i get the 240 though which is a bummer.

My bad...39 Gallon...lol, pressed the wrong key :)

why not go with the yellow watchman goby and the ornamental shrimp then?

300 gallon circular tank, 42" diameter and 42" high with 125 gallon refugium and a 100 gallon sump.
Would a 2.5" Emperor Angel get along with a 4" Maculosis Angel?
