6 Line, Midas, Chromis, Dottyback in that order of potential aggression. In that size tank, the first two are probably the only potential problems.

swap out the sixline for a carpenter wrasse--a nice pink or red on---far less possiblity of agression then the six line.
that should remove any possiblity of the dottyback becoming agressive since the entire reef will be its territory rather then competing with the sixline

Chromies can become agressive as tylt33 stated but I have found that occuring when you get a lone one left that is almost adult size---it then can start to nip fins of larger fish.

I'm new to reefing, just starting my first tank.

Custom in-wall plywood tank, interior dimensions 30"L X36"H x16.5"W
Tank is ~75 gallons, w/ 140 gallon sump.

Current wishlist (in order of probable aquisition):
  • Pyjama cardinals (2-3)
  • Black percula clownfish (2)
  • Some sort of flasher wrasse (Blue, Carpenter's, or Filamented) 2-3)
  • Blue Assessor (3-4)

I'd love to get a tang of some sort too, but i suspect my tank doesn't have the correct dimensions for a larger fish.

Will eventually have corals too, but will be FOWLR for the first 6-12 months.

I'm going to go with a no on any Tangs, unless you're putting them in the sump and it's 72"L

However, that's just from what i've read and I could be wrong. I don't have experience other than with clowns and some inverts, haha.

good plan all round:thumbsup:

The yellow tang could run into territorial issues with the other fish in that size of tank.

In a 6' 125Gal tank, would the following work together given appropriate rock structure and feeding schedules so that no one became unnecesarily ornary:
Snowflake Eel
Volitan Lionfish
Undulate Trigger

I don't know too much about the trigger in this situation, but I thought i'd ask. If the trigger wouldn't work, what could I substitute in with the other two that would get large enough so that it would feel threatened, or worse, be threatened by the (my big concern would be the eel) other inhabitants?

+1 with the Capn's advice. Pretty as they are, stay away from the tangs in your tank. They like a lot more swimming room.

BTW, excellent choice on a big sump! More often I notice people going too small on the sump.

I have two tanks so I may leave the 6 line in the one I use for QT (35g). So far no aggression with just a a pair of clowns, six line and the orchid db. The plan is to get a mandarin and something else for the DT. Thinking about a YWG and a pistol shrimp. What do you think? I only have two chromies in the DT maybe I should consider a couple of more unless I run the risk they will kill each other. I want the DT to have some movement and color to supplement the corals. I think there are lots of fish choices, but when you factor in aggression, size and corals the list gets much shorter. Then color and personal preferences narrow it down even more. At some point the QT will just be another DT when I get my main tank fully stocked, but I plan to keep it FOWLR. Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, I was pretty well resigned to not having a tang. i was just hoping someone would tell me I could :lmao:

The sump story is kind of funny...I wanted a 100g Rubbermaid, and when I called the local feed store, they said they had it. Turns out, they have stock tanks by another manufacturer (TuffStuff), and the closest they had was a 90 or a 140. I wasn't willing to go smaller, so....

Here is a solution for you:D

Ah ha ha ha ha! Too cute! Still haven't added anything new.. Can't find anything that'll hang out with my mean crew! Still researching :-)

YWG and pistol shrimp is a safe bet.

stocking 90 gal.

stocking 90 gal.

Have a 90 gallon oceanic with about a 20 or 30 gallon sump. I have hermits and astrea snails so far and 2 brittle red starfish. Tank has been up for 2 months. I have only put 1 blue green chromis in a couple days ago, clowns were bugging him that were in the other tank. What other fish are good starters? I want to put the clowns in sometime, but I was told to wait because they are territorial. I also want to get a Flame angel.

Clowns get territorial after some time. You could get a blenny, a flame angel (some nip coral), a wrasse of some sort, gobies... many many options. What tickles your fancy?

gobys---I like two or three fire gobies
bangii or pjamma cardinals
anthias
yellow or tommini tang
skunk clowns are very harmless
dotty back

I'm just starting out and have been reading a ton. I made it about 'halfway' through this thread and didn't see much about invert/coral only style tanks so a quick run over of my wishlist would be neato keen.

I'm in a 12G cube. 4" DSB. Huge baserock puttied with smaller to make towers and ledges, but all glued so it wont be moving, at all, ever, no matter how much something might dig.

I graviate towards odder, wierder creatures. Most fish are boring to me. :( Plan on doing a almost all invert/critter tank.

Yellow watchman and pistol pair as the only fish. (are there smaller pistols I should look for specifically? I know to avoid certain gobies.)

a few sexy shrimp
a few blue legged hermits
3 narcisious snails
2/3 algae eating snails
cleaner shrimp
1or 2 pom pom crabs
1 or 2 porcelain crabs
1or 2 cocoworms or featherdusters

Tank will contain whatever corals I can get to work with the 50/50's I already have until cash flow affords me nicer stuff. I know the pom poms will steal certain corals to carry around, thats fine.

There is a lot in the thread about inverts not really counting towards your bioload, and was told I can 'fit' more of htem in a tank then you would normally fish. Keep in mind inverts and oddities is what I'm looking for so if the list is good and there are other suggestions please post em.

Thanks!

I've gotten suggestions in other threads, but i'll guess I'll ask here since I'm still a noob and that's what this thread is for.

29g biocube with 32lbs of live rock, ~2" sandbed, stock lighting, media basket with filter floss, purigen, chemi-pro...fuge basket in chamber 2 with underwater light and chaeto, MJ1200 return pump and koralia nano in DT.

Fish stocking plans

1. Blue-green chromis (already in the tank, already named cooper, not going anywhere)
2. paired clownfish
3. McCoskers Flasher Wrasse
4. Royal Gramma

Let me know what you think.

I have a stocking question to add to the pile.
I'm downsizing from a 55g to a 29g. I've seen several clown pairs held happily in this size tank here on RC but I was wondering how a trio would do. I currently have a trio of occelaris clowns (a female orange along with a male and adolescent black misbars) that have to my knowledge always gotten along. When I bought them they were in a 20g and the previous owner said they were never aggressive towards each other. They occasionally dart towards the chromis (presumably saying "respect my authoritah!") and the adolescent's hiding spot is very close to the pair's. What to you guys think?

I am also a fan of shrimp gobies and pistol shrimp. I think that the YWG is a somewhat larger shrimp goby than some others (such as those in the genus Stonogobiops) and so would be happiest with one of the larger pistols, such as the tiger pistol shrimp. Perhaps someone else has suggestions on this too. For example, it seems to me that the popular Alpheus randallii shrimp would perhaps not be the best choice since it's burrow would be smaller than those made by the tiger pistol.

90g tank has
1-YWG w/tiger pistol
2 Pajama Cardinals
2 Blue Chromis
2 Fire Goby
Now two clowns
CUC

would like to add a dwarf angel and a couple other various fish - looking to keep smaller peaceful fish so I can have more variety in various color assortments
suggestions
