I'm gonna go look at that caribsea blend sometime this week.

both the reef shoppe and caribbean forest have the special grade in their display tanks, that's how i decided on it!!

I like really coarse sand in a very thin layer. It doesn't blow around, you don't have to be gentle with it, it can be "vacuumed" if you need to, and it generally doesn't seem to cause problems.

Fine sand looks nice but I just can't deal with how fickle it is when it comes to flow. I actually like crushed coral too, but the visual appearance is a little coarse in all but the very largest tanks, IMHO. Really coarse sand strikes me as having the advantages of both with none of the disadvantages.

I bought several hundreds of lbs of the stuff (and several 200g boxes of salt) for my 360g tank when one of the online retailers was having a $5.99 flat rate shipping special. That'll teach 'em to ship without surcharges.

I posted a pic earlier in this thread, I got that sand from marco rocks and it is absolutely awesome for a remote DSB but I would not put it in my DT. It is the softest, finest carribean beach sand and its almost like dust. I ended up buying 15lb of caribsea stuff from CF last night and put in about 1/5 the bag, just enough to cover the glass.

I think on my next tank Im going to go bare bottom. My plan is to have encrusting montis ans zoes grow over as much of the bottom glass as possible. I was also planning on painting the underside of the bottom glass a dark blue or black. My only problem is that I dont like the idea of the rock resting directly on the glass.
