Plenum system

Quote:
If you have any burrowing animals/fish you need to set another sheet of screening about 1 1/2" below the surface.............below this area is what shouldn't be disturbed.

I am aware, I stated this in my earlier post above.

That's because you didn't vacum the surface on a regular basis(once every few months). When I took mine down after 3 years it was odorless & completely clean. There was absolutely no build up of detritus in the bed which can't be said about DSB's.

Quite the opposite, I did vaccum the sand bed. Roughly about once every other water change (once a month); and as you stated only about 1 inch down; my sand bed was roughly 3 1/2 inches. The fact that mine had a smell.... well who knows - they were both setup for about 5 years. And there was some small amount of detritus built up under my plenum on one, btu not that much to note as I recall. In both tanks they were always stable, and I never had any problems with them (other than a very messy hair algea outbreak with one at the begining), I just didn't like the fact that something could happen with water in the plenum. With this hobby as with many other things in life, scenarios differ from individual to individual. My experience was different than yours, but we had (I assume) the same outcome; stable tanks. I just stated my experiences and opinions based off such.

No problem, I was just responding to this quote.........

As mentioned above don't mess with the sand after everything is setup and running.

I took this as you didn't touch your plenum bed.

Same here............just relating a different experience.
