Plumbing an external Skimmer (Skimz SM252)

I hadn't thought this part out beforehand. I was assuming that I could have my sump (Trigger Systems Sapphire 39) and skimmer (Skimz SM252 External) on the same bench. However, now I'm thinking that I need to elevate the skimmer about 5" or 6" so that the skimmer drain is higher than the top of my sump. After clearing the side, I'd turn it down into the sump area. Am I correct in thinking that I can't simply leave the skimmer at the same level, and then raise the height of the output by running a few 45 degree elbow fittings. If I did this, the efficiency of the skimmer would be greatly reduced. Any one have any clarification or advice that I may be missing? Thx

Couple of inches above the sump is enough as along as it drains with gravity.
