Use the union, or no? And why?

you don't need unions, but they make taking your system apart easier. Given that, I'd move that gate valve up closer to the bulkhead as it will be a lot easier to play with and will be less bulky looking.

I'd shorten up the tubing and include the unions. As often as possible you want to include them around mechanical devices for easy removal later.

+1 keep unions and shorten PVC between bulkhead and Union...

I have 2 drain and 2 return all with unions right below the bulkhead so of I want to redo plumbing my starting point is furthest back :)

Union, knowing you, you'll probably change your mind about something and need to redirect the drain so I vote for Change... Well, I didn't in 2008...
