Plumbing question

Hi RC
Recently I changed the size of the pipe leaving the pump from a 3/4 inch to a 1". going all the way to the locks where it is reduced back to a 3/4.
I have to valve this return back. Is this effecting how fast the water is running back into the tank due to the valve back. Higher velocity but less quantity?

Was it a mistake to up size this line?
Thanks all.

You want to over size the pipe to reduce friction on your return pump. So if your return pump has a 3/4 output then I would use 1" PVC.

I would have done the same thing. I always upsize atleast 1 pipe size from the outlet on my return pump. So I would definitely say no, u didn't make a mistake by upsizing. It's actually the preferred way to to it. There's nothing wrong with having to valve the return back.

This. The pressure a pump faces varies by a) diameter of the pipe b) how far it has to push the stuff and c) how high it has to push it...If you valve a pump back to reduce its flow, it's no more than happens when it has to lift water a few feet higher: you lose force.

You do increase pressure at a choke: that's how your garden nozzle works.

Nope, you didn't make a mistake. This is how I have mine from my pump to my 90 / 1" bulkhead, which then feeds into the tank with a 3/4 reducer to 3/4" loc line. I have dc pump so I can control the flow pretty much with it vs using a valve to control the flow.

You really should have left all the piping the same size. Going from one inch to 3/4. Is really not a good idea.

They went the other way, from 3/4 to 1". You should be fine. You are very unlikely to need a valve as the 3/4 nozzle will still reduce the flow some and the drain can probably deal with it.
