what do you people use to seal your plumbing connections? just regular plumbers putty and tape? anything specific i should avoid? thanks for the feedback.

I've experienced salt creep with silicone. I would go with PVC primer and cement. If it's threaded, just some teflon tape or paste. Just as 46FiatYamaha & dkh0331 says.
