Poidog's 70g Tech Tank Build

Is your Choati wrasse still alive? I want to get more leopards for my tank.

Yep, he's doing great (or good actually be a she). Eats like a pig and is very active. The only thing is that he hasn't really adjusted his time scheduale yet. Hes up around 8am and goes back to bed around 5pm. My full light cycle is from 11-10.

Hi everyone, quick update. I had also lost the two helfrichis the same time I lost Jose. The helfrichis died of ich. It was not present in my tank before (or maybe it was, who really knows) the addition of them or from the Borbonius. After their first signs of ich I didn't worry too much as I thought it was just sand stuck to their mucus coat (as I have observed from them before), but this time the spots did not go away... they remained eating and active until one day they turned up dead. I tried to get them out to treat but I couldn't. My small cleaner goby showed signs of ich and I was able to get him out and into a hospital tank with copper. He is doing much better now and no more ich. All the other fish are fine and showed no signs of the parasite. I know it is in my tank now, but I will do my best to breaking the life cycle by keeping my fish loaded with vitamins to resist future outbreaks. Since the parasite needs to latch onto a host within 24-48 hours unless it dies, if my current fish are resistant (which they've demonstrated they are) it should break the life cycle.

This is the first time I've ever had fish die on me like this so it was a shock. I've lost a small goby to a power head once, and the other helfrichi that mysterious died of some sort of infection, but this was a first.

On a lighter note, I got a NET module for my RKL from PA. I had to also order HUB module because I apparently 3 modules is on the verge from the PC4 not being able to power them all up. So the NET will randomly drop and my moonligths aren't was bright. Also, I'm getting errors from my iTemp and my pH probe. DA said that I need to boost power to my systems and the iTemp needs to be a dedicated plug and not daisy chained like before. If you ask me its poor design on DA side to sell more things to you. In hindsight I wish I had invested in an Apex instead of DA. PA is shipping a HUB out to me today (which doesn't some with a power adapter - another thing to buy), so I should have it all working tomorrow after a trip to radio shack. Below is a screenshot of my current tank params.

I also got a d-link day/night wifi webcam to position on the tank. Once it comes in I'll share the link so anyone can go to the URL and see my tank. The webcam along with the NET gives me peace of mind as a digital babysitter for the tank. I was worried out of my mind being gone for 2 days over Christmas that everything would be okay with the tank. Now, all I need to do is log into the NET and see my params, and log into the webcam to get a visual

Ah ick, starter of all unsolicited advice. Here's mine:

1. Get all of your fish out of the display tank and into a QT. Assuming you don't have any big fish in there, they can probably all fit into a 29 gallon tank. If you want something bigger, I have a 55 lying on my balcony that you can have for free (and I live about 15 minutes away).

2. Let the DT sit empty (of fish) for 8 weeks.

3. Treat the QT with cupramine or hypo (I would do the latter, because jumping fish tend to jump under cupramine.)

4. After treating the fish and letting the tank sit fallow, throw them back in the DT. Leave the QT running for the next purchase.

I'm sure you've considered this already. But that's a really beautiful Anthias.

Just a quick update on the tank.... last night I noticed that my ATO reservoir was empty after filling it up the day prior. Mind you I get about 3-5 days for the reservoir before I have to refill it so I found it a bit odd that it would be emptied this quick. I took a look and noticed my stand was swelled with water! If you remember, my stand is that cheap (although not price wise) Oceanic Tech stand that is made out of MDF. Mind you NO tank stand should EVER be made out of MDF because of the high possibility of accidentally water damage. I am incredibly careful and wipe up all spill so that I do not damage my stand, but in a circumstance like this, I had no control over it. What had happened was that the clear plastic that the ATO jug is made out of split (like the plastic got brittle from housing kalk water), and dumped about 1 gallon of water out through the crack (Jug was from the container store. I have a new back up one that I'm using, but over time this one will do the same thing. Because of this I'm spending the money (unfortunately) to have a custom acrylic ATO reservoir that fits my area made.

If you remember when I set up the tank (go back to the first posts,I placed 2x4s in the back of the stand for rear structural support because of the MDF. I'm glad I did that now as I'm sure those 2x4 supports are what is carrying the majority of the tank load, on the left side, now. I now have to place a 2x4 support on the front left corner because the water was absorbed by the whole left side of the stand supports - front and rear. It is structurally fine now, but now that it has water swell I don't trust it for the long haul and need to add additional supports.

I'll be calling Oceanic today to express my concern and disapproval of their materials they are using. I don't think I'll get me anywhere, but they need to know that MDF should not be used anywhere around water!

Combined updated!

I had a new ATO acrylic reservoir made because of the above mishap. The ATO reservoir made by nano sea creations is done and ready to be picked up. Looks real nice. I like the euro bracing the did on the top.

It's great! Very high quality. Anthony at nano sea creations did a great job. He shipped it via UPS for $10 more since St. Charles is a drive for me and it was here next day. Highly recommended for any acrylic work. Local, great work, and very competitive pricing.

I rinsed it out and put it in the stand.... perfect fit.

How about a little TDF eye candy?

Hey Eric, sorry to learn of all the fish loss. How is the tank doing? I got a load of other questions so hope you don't mind me asking:
1) are the diatoms gone?
2) did you have any other algae algae, if so how did you deal with it?
3) are you adding any supplements for the corals like amino acids etc?

Love the TDF. Please update the thread with lots of top down coral shots. Your last tank was real nice and had beautiful corals colours, so treat us with some eye candy from this tank.

Howdy!

Thanks. I know, the fish loss sucked :( All the other fish are doing well and healthy. I fed them a mix of Rods food steroided up on Metro, Focus, Aminos, garlic, and vit C and it knocked out whatever they had - ich, some other parasite....etc.
1. Yep, all gone
2. There is some small amounts (like the size of your thumb - not very much) of hair algae in the corners where there is lower flow and light. Snails & emeralds have been keeping under control. I have a new yellow tang in QT that I will add in the next couple weeks that should eat it all up.
3. Only supplements I'm using are:
- Kalk
- Zeovit Coral Snow (clears the water and binds to floating detritus to skim out). I use this once per week
- I mix amino acids in with the fish food for the fish, so the corals do get a trace amount of that.

I need to get a camera box or a viewing box for top down shots! But don't worry it's on my list of things to get ;)

I'll get some pics up for you.... sorry to leave you in the dark for so long!

Here's a little pic update for my friend in London :)

Many thanks for posting the photos and answering my questions. I always try and feed a variety of foods to my fishes and consequently I've never had fishes die due to ich or other illnesses. I've had fish come in with ich etc that can clearly be seen and after a couple of weeks it clears up. I attribute the getting better to mainly healthy feeding and of course good water quality.

That snowcone prostrata looks awesome. I am not into LPS too much, but oh my, those are sick looking pieces! Love the frogspawn and the acan.

Do pick up a camera box for taking underwater shots. Coral colours as you know look the best from above and you should get some awesome photos.

I made one myself and I love it. I use it to look at corals anyway since I have a rimless open top tank.

Look forward to more updates.

Beautiful! Love the shot of the 5th coral (its a Caroliana right?)

Chalices are nice too. I bought my first Chalice a month ago and really like it. Keep up the good work and treat us to more SPS coral shots when you have the time. :)

Killer pics as usual! I was about to bother you about them. How's that crazy mixed rainbow monti piece coloring up? Love the Anthias pic too, he's getting big!

Also, we need more pics!

UWW rainbow monti is the first coral in the most recent pics above. It has a green base, bright orange polyps, and a purple growth ring. It's brighter in person, that pic is a little over exposed.

Hey Eric
are u having any issues with the ssb? Are u cleaning it /stirring it during wc's?

Where did u pick up that cherry sour chalice. That thing is hot!

Shallow sand bed?
No issues. I stir/vacuum the very top layer during water changes so it looks white.

Cherry sour came from cherry corals. It was a frenzy to get. Im considered lucky to score it. Jason fox got a frag too so I'm sure he'll be selling it in a year. Here's the colony pic:
